    Question

It seems to me its worth researching what "sms" is sent to iPhone from Yahoo, because my provider (and I believe many other) supports sending SMS as soon as new e-mail arrives...

Anyone knows how to "sniff" cellular traffic coming to iPhone?

Sounds great, deadstick. I'm thrilled that someone is working on this finally. If I can be of any help in terms of testing or whatever, please let me know. If you are successful in creating this, I will definitely send you a contribution as promised on the first page of this thread.

With regard to how to trigger the mail app to check email, perhaps the desktop mac plugin which I linked to above might provide come clues.

deadstick -- I concur with David -- I'm willing to help test any apps or contribute in some way including a donation.

David: Thankgoodness someone's picked up the scent, for a while I thought you and I were the ONLY people on earth who wanted IMAP-IDLE for our iPhone

ps: where abouts are you? I'm in Vancouver, BC.

My fingers are crossed! I'm kinda surprised that this issue has gotten so little attention. As a long time Windows Mobile user, "push" mail has been at or near the top of user discussions/wish lists since the early days of the Treo 300 and the development of Chattermail, the first true push solution for smartphones. Since then, we've seen MS's quasi push Autd, VGS mail, etc., leading up to Windows Mobile 05 which finally brought true push to the platform. Now let's get developement going on the iPhone!

If you go to this url:

    http://iphone.rustyredwagon.com/

You can download my first cut. Remember it's in it's early stages and currently only pops up a notification that you have new mail. I have to research how to trigger the Mail App to connect to the server on demand (if it can be done at all). Read the instructions on the webpage how to install. There's other info on there that you should read as well.

I'm interested at this point if it works at all for you (does for me) and if it doesn't, to get hold of logs showing me why its not working. If you ssh into your phone and run /Applications/iMapIdle.app/iMapIdle from the prompt you'll see debug info which will help me solve any issues you may be having...

    Enjoy!

Hi deadstick -- it works, it works!

I'm using 1.0.2 -- the pop-up comes up almost immediately. Amazing. Good work. I know this is the very very ultra-first cut, and I know your your site you're testing a way to kick-start the mail.app -- questions and/or comments:

    1. no sound notification with the pop-up -- but this will be moot if the mail.app can be kickstarted

    2. I'm assuming you're going to kick-start the default mail.app, since I actually don't want to get mail from my imap server, but i want the mail pulled from another account -- sounds stupid, but right now I've got mail...

    Going to cool@name.com --> forwarded --> fastmail.fm/IMAP

You see, I actually want the emails to reply from cool@name.com, and not reply from my fastmail.fm (boring name) account.

Anyway, awesome work... keep us posted with the next iteration.

Hi deadstick. This is very exciting, indeed! I went to your site and was just about to download when I saw the note about the next version forthcoming soon. I'm going to wait for that one, and then report back ASAP. I also promise a donation at that time. Thanks for all of your hard work.

    deadstick,
good work! i have it working on 1.0.2 was a little rocky, but i think that was my fault, i used independence to install and the permissions were incorrect, i fixed this via ssh and everything seems to be working now. this is a feature request when you get a chance, the ability to have imapidle check multiple accounts. keep up the good work!
