[Req] An Idea for Cut & Paste
Just because I haven't seen one of these threads in awhile, here's an idea on how to implement cut and paste.
The idea is to take advantage of multitouch, but also to create an even closer analogy to cut and paste than what we've had before.
The key action is to drag the cut object off the screen using two fingers. You can detect that the two fingers are not pinching or enlarging the object. You detect that they are translating from the location of the object to the edge of the screen.
At the edge of the screen the material could be shrunk to a very small icon that sticks to the edge of the screen.
To paste an item onto the screen or into a field, just drag it from the edge of the screen to the paste spot. As it drags over it might enlarge into its full size so the user can still decide if this is the right object to paste. A cursor could appear in any box where the pasted object might successfully land. It could be dragged with either one or two fingers...
Now, cutting itself: think of a coupon with its dotted line. Now draw a dotted line around whatever you want to cut. A dotted line would be drawn in, and perhaps highlighting if it's text. Once you stop dotting, the object might shake slightly to show that it's active. Since this is a moderately sophisticated hand gesture, it might be simplified: a couple "dots" of the dotted line, then you can just drag your finger around the object.
Copy instead of cut? The dotted action may be the same, but the drag may be different: after it's dotted, the computer knows its in copy and paste mode, so perhaps a single finger would be used to copy and two fingers (scissors) to cut. Alternately, after dotted, an icon could appear where the X appears on other items. This icon would be a small scissors. If you drag with two fingers without pressing the scissors button, then it just copies. If you hit the scissors button, the item is cut and can then be dragged. A graphic might be used to show the item lifting away from the page a small amount to show that it's been cut.
Getting things off the "clipboard:" Since we can have multiple things on the clipboard - the edge of the screen will hold many - we need a method for getting rid of them. Touch and hold and all of the pasted objects start to shake and can be moved around... like the main icon page. A small X pops on them as well, and they can be deleted.
