    Default [req] alt-tab

one of the things i really miss on the blackberry is being able to alt-tab. switching between apps on the iphone would be much less painful if an alt-tab solution was developed. i was thinking something along the lines of holding the home button and using the volume up and down buttons. is this at all possible?

Alt+Tab usually (on Windows, Mac, Windows Mobile) switches between running applications. The iPhone runs one foreground application only though. "Switching" would mean "terminate current app, start next app", and thanks to the starting delay, alt-tabbing through applications probably would be kind of slow. Maybe if all applications would use proper default.png (or whatever that default background shown during app start) files, you could tab between those. But apps don't.

Of course you could add an app selector dialog to choose the application to run... but then, just pressing the Home button and using the integrated app launcher would still be faster.

So in the end, thanks to the single-foreground-app concept, I don't think this could be made in a useful way. I could be wrong of course and missed something (like auto-saved screenshots on app close that could be used instead of the default.png issue mentioned above, but then, that would raise privacy issues...)

i should start off by saying that i have a very basic understanding of the iphone's os and even less of an understanding of any sort of programming knowledge but i was under the impression the iphone continued to run apps in the background. otherwise wouldn't the ipod turn off when i open safari or isolitaire lose my game when i answer a call? i know with the apps coming from the apple app store in the near future those will all be closed when not in use but i thought the hacked native apps and apple's apps did continue to run in the background.
