Remember Pythagoras? x+y+z=total. Your total is 0.414, a bit lower than the others so far.

ok, here goes the second one from my mom:

    X: 0.015625
    X: -0.429688
    Z: -0.109375

    this gives 0.444

    so to conclude:

    alex2016g 0.429
    saxosuper1600 0.442
    Jim Danner 0.432
    Rello I: 0.414
    Rello II: 0.444

    AVG: 0.432

hi all. This looks like an awsome app in the making. Can't wait to get out in the gtiturbo and log some g's. Here's my contribution:

    X 0.007812
    y 0.437500
    Z 0.093750

As usual the figures fluctuate like mad but this is the most average for me. The 2nd set is

    X 0.015625
    y 0.445313
    Z 0.101562

    Thanks guys

Good luck with this. Paypal account at the ready!

    thanks in advance
PS:anyone who wants to help are welcome

Default Conclusions from the measured data

With 7 phones reporting back, we have this result:
    • average reading: 0.4379
    • standard deviation (typical distance to the average): 0.0140 (3.2%)
    • The accelerometer readings are on average 12.4% below factory specifications (Apple, are you reading this?)
    • If we don't calibrate before measuring, then on a typical acceleration test (with a car that goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds: not exceptional according to this table), I'd expect the values reported by most phones to be up to 16% away from the truth.
    • By doing a calibration run on the individual phone before the actual measurements, we can of course improve this.
    • All this assumes that the different axes x, y and z are off by approximately the same percentage -- something that has not been checked but seems sort-of likely.
Oh, one other point: I'm not a programmer, and I don't know how to make this application. This is where my contribution to the project ends...

Conversion of raw data into results
The existing tools report a list of accelerometer readings x, y, z at various times t. So after a run, there's a whole list of sets x(t), y(t), z(t). Before making a graph, this must be converted into the horizontal acceleration over time (expressed in terms of g, since I think that makes sense). Here we go:
    1. For each time t, calculate the raw total squared: r(t) = x(t) + y(t) + z (t)
    2. Divide each of this list of numbers by the calibration constant C. This gives the total acceleration squared: f(t) = r(t)/C. If the application has no calibration routine, use the average from our collective calibration measurements: C=0.19174 (Yes, the number of decimals is ridiculous)
    3. Subtract 1 from each of the f(t) to get the horizontal acceleration squared: a(t) = f(t) - 1
    4. Take the square root of each of these results to get the horizontal acceleration a(t), expressed in units of g.
    5. Make a graph of these numbers, with time t on the horizontal axis and acceleration a(t) on the vertical axis (which runs from, let's say, 0g to 1g).
    Good luck programming (anyone?).
Oh, and if you program a calibration routine, let the user put the phone down in a still position (on a table, in the dock, ...) and take measurements for a few seconds, then go through step 1 for each of these measurements, calculate the average of those r(t) values, and you've got your C. Store it in a plist or something.
