why not make a poll to see how are the measures of the accelerometer standing still in his dock? (using accelerolog!)
mine X:0.015625 Y:-0.429688 Z:-0.101562 (these numbers mostly appear cause it always changes)
so my idea is...if all iphones have the same or very similar numbers can we just make the app to ignore this values and measure this numbers like a 0...just an idea bye
Please we need help in developing an application to measure (HP, Lateral G's, Braking distance) in our cars...

maybe you could have a zero'ing button, where when you press it sets the current values to 1g??

I'm looking at the readings of the meters through the SysInfo application (from the Community Sources, under Utilities in Installer). It is clear that they are way off. In my case:
    • x (right to left along the display) is reading on average 13.9% too low
    • y (from Home button to clock along the display) reads 13.8% too low
    • z (pointing outward from the display) reads 10.2% too low.
When I have the iPhone in its dock, the average accelerometer readings are 0.027, -0.418 and -0.1055, which gives me a total acceleration of 0.432. On a scale where g = 0.5, this tells me that gravity is 8.47 m/sē in my location. I'm at sea level...
Well cant we inbuilt a simple script that when you put it in the dock, you press the button and in 2 sec it will take an average reading of the x,y,z and then input this data into an equation?

That will solve all your problems with different accelerometer in different iPhones!

We even have the equation. |

After correction of the raw values, just add up the squares of the three readings, subtract 0.25 from the total, take the square root, and multiply by 19.62 to get the acceleration in m/sē (or by 0.01219 to get it in miles per second squared). This assumes only that the car is on a horizontal surface -- which it should be for an acceleration test anyway.

Ok just tested mine using accelerolog

    X:0.023438 Y:-0.414062 Z:-0.109375

    total acceleration: 0.4289050831

Which make gravity at where I am be - 8.57810 m/s/s

very similar to my readings....so then how can we reset the original values to start from a 0G (no acceleration)

    Default We need more measurements

So far, the results of in-dock measurements with three iPhones are:

    alex2016g 0.429
    saxosuper1600 0.442
    Jim Danner 0.432

    Average: 0.434
    Standard deviation (estimate): 0.007

The standard deviation (the typical difference in results between iPhones) amounts to 0.015 g (or 1.5% of the measurement). This is small compared to the accelerations in a typical car test.

If this is really true, we can conclude that
    1. ST Microelectronics sells a product that consistently measures 11 to 15 % too low
    2. Correcting for the measurement error is pretty simple.
However, three is not enough to determine this. We need more people to put the phone in dock, measure the accelerometer readings, and put the results here.

    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Jim you are absolutly right we need more results. Ask adkins to make this a sticky post.
do you know if anyone is still working on weighting the software?

yes....if any admin sees this post can we post it as sticky?....to correct this accelerometer feature so we can create applications based on this results for everyone!....bye!

anyone else? who wants to help? just use sensors.app and submit your acceleration numbers...with your iphone standing in his dock, it can help in so much applications around internet (for the iphone obviously), comeon support this idea and application!....just your accelerometer numbers...!

Hey pkanders, are you still developing the tool???
