The application was developed to count a predefined set of movements, it has changed to a generic logging tool that saves (dumps) the values to the disk; no extensive testing has been done. I think using a spreadsheet and some logic you can work out the real values in G.
You probably need to measure some calibration data at the beginning.

If you post the sheet here others can use it and if there is enough interest we make the application dedicated to vehicle tuning showing directly a performance graph.

    A question regarding sampling rates:

I have been collecting data using AcceleroLog and examining the output. The program itself seems to have a maximum sampling rate of 30Hz (even when set at 40Hz), not sure why.

Of much greater concern is that the underlying data seems to only be at 10Hz. Even though there is a sample every 0.034s (roughly), each value is repeated three times before a new value occurs. Is this an issue with the iPhone or the software? And are you sampling the accelerometer using the AcceleratedInX function or the IOHIDEvent method or something else?

    Thanks

    Default Calibration

To calibrate the accelerometer before use in car testing, we need to know one thing. Maybe the people with a technical understanding of the device (iPizza?) will know this. The question is: should we expect that the readings in x, y, and z direction will be off by the same factor?

For example, in the test I posted above (post # 39), I found the readings in all directions to be too low. In x and y direction they were about 14% low, and in z direction about 10%. This is close enough to consistency to use a single calibration run that generates a single calibration factor which can be applied to all readings, irrespective of the orientation of the phone during measurement.

If this is the case with all phones, that makes things a lot easier. However, if some phones are 10% too high in x and 10% too low in y, different calibrations per axis are needed, which makes things more complicated.

Who knows more? (Or we could just test this with 10 different phones to find out).

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

if you want I could be a beta tester I don't know much about programing but I could help with the idea cause I requested this app to be created cause for me will be very useful to use it, so if you want I could help in any way you need thanks for developing this bye!
Please we need help in developing an application to measure (HP, Lateral G's, Braking distance) in our cars...

its a cool idea but you can't measure bhp from just measuring the timings

do u know what would really be cool, a G meter, it should'nt be too difficult because really "g meters" use accelerometers anyway, if someone does make this, i will be more then happy to be a beat tester!!!

bring on the g-meter i say, might cause people to floor it around corners and standstill start alkl the time and harsh braking but who cares!!! i want a g-meter!!!

No, it will not give the (horse) power. Also it will not be accurate enough to give you the time to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph or 100 km/h -- if you want to measure a time, use a stopwatch (there is one on the iPhone).

This can only be what you called a "g-meter". It can draw a graph of the horizontal acceleration over time, which could of course be expressed in units of g. This will tell you the driving behavior, or the gear-switching behavior, or something about how strong the engine is relative to the mass of the car. I'm sure many people would find that nice to have.

please dont treat me like an idiot, u don't get an A in A-level physics for nothing.

u would need to get it plot a graph for the accelreation, you would just need the accellration value it self but the ardest thing will be to calibirate the acceloremter with real values, i mean how do u know your accelrating at half a g (4.9m/s/s) constantly??

Didn't mean to treat you like an idiot, sorry if it came across that way.

The accelerometer makes several measurements per second, so it will show whether the acceleration is constant at 1/2 g, or varying between values, right?

Calibration works by doing a measurement at rest (when you know that the accelerometer must indicate exactly 1g).
