I'm looking at the readings of the meters through the SysInfo application (from the Community Sources, under Utilities in Installer). It is clear that they are way off. In my case:
    • x (right to left along the display) is reading on average 13.9% too low
    • y (from Home button to clock along the display) reads 13.8% too low
    • z (pointing outward from the display) reads 10.2% too low.
When I have the iPhone in its dock, the average accelerometer readings are 0.027, -0.418 and -0.1055, which gives me a total acceleration of 0.432. On a scale where g = 0.5, this tells me that gravity is 8.47 m/sē in my location. I'm at sea level...

With readings that are 14% off like this, the tool will not me much use. You have to build in some way to gauge it!

On a related note: absolutely no need to tell the user to hold the device flat during use. That would introduce yet another measurement error! After correction of the raw values, just add up the squares of the three readings, subtract 0.25 from the total, take the square root, and multiply by 19.62 to get the acceleration in m/sē (or by 0.01219 to get it in miles per second squared). This assumes only that the car is on a horizontal surface -- which it should be for an acceleration test anyway.
As stated before - I need to get the basics up and running properly before I start adding extra features (or better functionality) to it. There are LOADS of factors to incorporate into it, how soft if the suspension of the car, how much are the dampers at the rear compressed during acceleration and so on..

But my intention is not to make a 100% accurate tool, I just want to have a tool that can show some consistent readings, I honestly do not care if my car does 0-100 in 7.6 or 7.7 seconds..

But I have been set back a bit I no longer have the iPhone I used for developing But if you want to donate so i can get a new one.. (I'm a student, so not that many money)

No problem, just wanted to point out a few things you could consider. In my view, going to 100 in 7.6 is a whole lot different than going to 114 in 7.6 seconds -- these are the margins that cars are judged on. But I agree, a basic tool would already be quite good to have.

The point about not needing to hold the iPhone flat is still valid, though, and it might be reassuring.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Trusting you will all donate (!) and help improve the application we decided to publish the version of AcceleroLog that will save data to disk.

Soon available though the Ste Packaging repository but if you can't wait add the following repository to your installer:

    iphone.robota.nl

or download directly from the site:

    http://www.robota.nl/products/iPhone%20AcceleroLog.html

Please share your Excel processing sheet with others, if enough donations come in we will make a version dedicated to car performance/tuning.

IMHO hacked software for the iPhone should be free - the version I saw was not entirely free, so I uninstalled it again. If you make it free I'll have a look at it again, and if I like it, I will donate money to it - but then I need to know that the money donated will be used on development..

1st. "IMHO hacked software for the iPhone should be free" - oh? I assume it's your personal opinion. Writing quality software takes a lot of time, why should that be free? Because you are a poor student?

2nd. "If you make it free I'll have a look at it again" - if you would have looked at it again you would have seen it is donation based just as many other apps we wrote (iSpit, ScreenDump, Chess, SysInfo and others). The funny thing is that the idea behind the donations for community software is that even poor students can use the software legally so you better thank the ones that did and will donate.

3rd. "but then I need to know that the money donated will be used on development" - did you read anything at all on the site? Your donation will go straight to beer, let's hope we get drunk ;-)

I would like to see a statistic from the Installer-guys on how many of the millions of users really donated some $$$

    you have mine...
...a simple max-value display would be nice for playing around. then the text file does not need to be extracted all the time for little tests...

That's a bit juvenile. He says: "IMHO hacked software for the iPhone should be free". You don't know that IMHO means "in my humble opinion"? Come on...

Writing quality software takes a lot of time, why should that be free? Because you are a poor student?
That's even more juvenile. He thinks a free software model is the best way to make and disribute software; your response is that he's a "poor student". Grow up.
