Utility to adjust display settings (contrast, gamma, etc)
A much needed app for the iPhone is a utility that would allow adjustment of the LCD display settings. There has been a wide variation in the visual qualities of the screens of iPhones produced up to this point.
First, there are three different manufacturers of the LCD panels used in the iPhone, all with positive and negative aspects. The 5755136 panel tends to be brighter than other two displays but can sometimes look washed out. The 7455232 panel is darker but has higher contract--however recent batches have exhibited a "negative-black" issue that displays darker grays improperly. The newer 7451392 panel seems to be somewhere in between in terms of brightness, but displays a subtle interlaced effect (shimmering) and seems to have a wider range of possible color temperatures from blueish to reddish.
Second, there are the natural variations in manufacturing and calibration within each LCD panel type. I have seen a great deal of variation in maximum brightness, contrast, sharpness and color temperature for each of the panel types listed above. Some iPhones have very dirty yellow or reddish whites while others are very blueish.
I believe that many of these issues could be addressed with a utility that would allow for the adjustment and calibration of the LCD display settings, including contrast, gamma, and color temperatures and profiles.
I wanted to see if such a utility would be technically possible for the iPhone at this time with the current knowledge of the display types and drivers.
