Default Native iPhone IM Client: ApplloIM Alpha!

So, it seems our wonderful friend Arminius2 has managed to finally get his IM client working. He has uploaded an early test version, which does infact work nearly flawlessly (over WiFi, I have not tried over EDGE, but I don't see why it wouldn't). Very basic functionality so far, no buddy groups, just your list in alphabetical order. Sending messages works flawlessly, you just have to tap the line entry when you bring up the keyboard.

You can grab it over at http://code.google.com/p/apolloim/

And make sure to thank him and whoever else worked on the project, as this is one of the major programs the community has been waiting for.

    works like a charm!!

just to clarify, this does NOT pass our userid/passwords through a 3rd party server to get this to work, right? This app directly goes to the AIM server?

And thanks again for this app!

Thank Arminius, not me, I'm just the bringer of news

Anyhow, yes, it does connect directly to the AIM and other protocol servers.

Interesting. I was playing around with a command line AIM client called bsflite, which compiled and ran fine, but wouldn't connect. It seems that the iphone specifically was failing to resolve "login.oscar.aol.com", but switching to "login.messaging.aol.com" worked instead.

Still pretty buggy, but looks good so far. Will be pretty cool if it can integrate alerts on an incoming message (which means it'll need to keep the connection alive).

Vary nice work so far - thanks for the app!
