Default [MobileSafari] Tutorial > Hacking the Built-In Google Search

    Update I:
We have a patcher now. (Mac)

    http://www.iphone-ticker.de/wp-conte...wsearchapp.zip

its a drag and drop application for os x.

Copy /Applications/MobileSafari/MobileSafari of of your iphone and drop it on newsearch.app. it will make the needed changes within mobile safari and wil make a backup of the original file.

Just re-upload the pached "MobileSafari" File back on your iPhone (overwrite the old one) and restart.
    Update II:
    A Windows-Patcher is Available here: http://radge.org/
    Thanks Radge

    Update III:
There is a Website and a new Video now: http://web.mac.com/noestreich

    Actual Posting:
It may not be new to everyone. to me it was. today i discovered how to hack the build-in MobileSafari search-provider. instead of google i like to use serchilo (http://www.serchilo.net/) . its a free command-line-style search.

a short intro, if i type on of the following queries now in mobilesafaris input-field:
    • "g test" - searches in google for "test"
    • "gm berlin" - brings up the google maps applikation with berlin
    • "ebay gameboy" - ebay-search for gameboy.
    • "w gameboy" -opens wikipedia entry for gameboy

ect. ect. there are hunderts of commandos available.

    WHAT I DID:
    1. I downloaded the MobileSafari-Binary 1.1.4 of of my iPhone (via ssh/sftp), its located in "/Applications/MobileSafari.app/MobileSafari"
    2. open it in an hex editor
    3. edited as seen in the screenshots
    4. reuploaded.

now the google-string is replaced with serchilo. and safari got mutch more powerfull.

A demo-Video in german is available here http://www.viddler.com/explore/iFUN/videos/31/
from minute 4:25 you can see the new search in action

In my blog, the people got good results under windows , with: Hex Editor XVI32

Google should provide you with a link. its freeware.

BTW: i would post the edited mobile safari binary here. but sadly its copyright-material... is there any way to build a quick patching-tool?
