I looked in to this a little more, and it looks like my original theory was correct. If you click on a file that will automatically play in the web browser, the plugin will download the file. If you click on a link that opens a "save" window to save the file locally, you get the "file too large" message.

    An example:

I went to the NPR site and tried to dl the latest episode of "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me!". When I clicked on the "Download mp3" button, I got the error message.

I then went to my laptop and got the address for the link to the actual mp3 file itself (by leaving the pointer over the "Download mp3" button and looking at the address show in the status bar). I typed this address in to the Safari browser on my iPod Touch and the file started to download!

I'm not sure if there is any way to get this address on the iPhone/Touch, so files that don't play directly in the browser might be undownloadable at this point. Hopefully this info can help those with better programming skills than me to figure out a way to fix this!

Hold on a minute - I just found something else out. Keep holding down your finger on the link, and the link address pops up! So you can probably type up the link address that pops up and THAT might download the file.

    Worth a shot...

    - go to www.mediaconverter.org
    - use the url method and enter "http://download.skai.gr/elfren051107.wma"
    - choose mp3 as the output format
    - leave bitrate as is or change it, tried it both ways
    - wait a couple of minutes for the conversion
    - a link should come up with an mp3 file which I can't seem to download.

Maybe the MIME type is different, I tried adding x-mpeg3 in the plist as well but I'm not sure how to check the MIME type of the link above, maybe someone can do it for me ?

    thanks

Isn't the blue block with the ? just mean there's no plugin found/loaded for that type?

Unfortunately, zip attachment is impossible to save, it's shown as blue small ? inside the message, but it is rather predictable result.

No,no, you got it wrong. I was not talking about the MIME type of the wma file, I'm not trying to download that one. If you go through the conversion through mediaconverter.org like I described earlier , then you are presented with a link to download an mp3 file but the MIME type reported from the link is text/plain. Like someone is saying above, it might be the case that it is trying to open a new window or something like that. In any case, I couldn't download it even after I inserted a text/plain section in the plist.

I am able to download mp3s from other sites just fine.

I have created (over WinSCP) a new directory named
    /System/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/File Download Plugin.webplugin
and put two files there (Info.plist, LCDownloader)
then I changed the rights for LCDownloader to 755 and rebooted the iphone.
Upon restart I've tried to download small zip file from Internet using direct link in Safari. Safari returned me an error " Safari can't download this file".
    What's wrong?
    I have the same problem.

    Please, what I must make? (i'm sorry, i don't speak good english^^)

Please don't post any requests for other plugins in this thread. That's a good sign for me to ignore you.
Like any other projects I do publicly, whether or not I continue to improve it is based off how much time I have outside of work, whether or not I feel like working on it, and the quality of feedback I get. (seeing stupid posts with awful use of punctuation and no real content or irrelevant content makes me lose interest fast, seeing high quality posts like "By the way, if I do this, this, and this, it crashes. I think you might have forgot to check if such and such value happens to be blank" makes me feel appreciated because you're showing to me you actually care and are trying to be constructively helpful.)
First off, let me just say thank you for making this plugin. Seriously. Of the handful of things that can make the iPhone really just kick ass way more than it does, this is one of them. So, thanks! Keep up the good work. (odds are you aren't following this thread anymore, since everyone kinda turned into vultures over it)

As far as the plugin being ugly, no big deal. Doesn't have to be pretty. However, if you're interested in refining it, the only thing I'd change is the color of the text on the button. If it were dark-on-green, it would be easier to read from arm's length (say you tap to download, and set the phone on the table...it would be easier to know at a glance when it's done). If you're so inclined, you could also change the overall color of the button based on download state. Green for complete, red for failed, yellow or blue for "in progress." Any interest?

Well sure it's a kick-ass idea, since many file types are now supported the next step is changing the way it looks, i was thinking of a progress bar and KB/sec information, would be very useful for heavy files... Anyone good at programming ?

It's no longer a one-person project so everyone is welcome to present his own completely rebuilt version... What about you punkassjim, will you release your own version with special color buttons based on download status ?
