    For Rogers Users -

If you have one of the old sim cards you won't have any issues with the red badge showing up on your MobilePhone.app but if you use one of there new sim cards, there is no way yet to get rid of it... you just have to live with it... i personally am using the new ones cause EDGE nevere seemed to work with my old sim card...

I have seen this on some unlocked iPhone's here at the store, usually only requires a SIM change
    iPhone: 16gb [Second iPhone] - Running 1.1.4
    Carrier: T-Mobile USA (I work there )
    OS: Windows Vista x64 Ultimate/Ubuntu 8.04

Actually, the problem should be the opposite.... The 3030 and 3040 series SIM cards (check the number as part of the ICCID on the card -- it's the middle four digits) will cause the red dot to pop up every time you restart the phone or return from airplane mode.

The newer 4000-series cards do not have this problem. I went to a Rogers Plus store about a month ago and specifically asked for the 4000 series card, and they transferred my account information to it (including all features), and I have not had the red dot appear since, except of course when a new voicemail actually is waiting).

Note that you have to specifically ask for a 4000 series card. If you simply ask for a "New SIM card" you might still get one of the older ones, as they're still used in many lower-end phones that don't require (or aren't compatible with) the newer 4000-series card. You should be able to check the number on the card itself before buying it -- again it will be the middle group of four digits in the ICCID number printed on the back of the card.

I'm not sure what the equivalent would be for Fido users, but the "4000" series SIM cards on Rogers are those used by HSDPA/3G devices.

It's possible that there are SIM cards that are older than the 3030/3040 series that also do not present this problem, but I have yet to actually find any. My remaining phones all use 3040 series SIM cards, and when I pop them into my iPhone, the red dot comes back almost immediately.
