No such problem here (proximus belgium). It makes me believe it has nothing to do with visual voicemail.

It shows up when you have voicemail. And, you have to call your voicemail box to clear it after every reboot....and it will show up again when you get voicemail. If ther eis a number in it, then that's an indicator of missed calls.

    I"m on t-mobile as well.

Try calling your own phone then leaving yourself a voice message. Then call your voicemail, listen to the message, and delete it. That cleared the red dot for me. It is basically your voicemail notification icon. Since there is no setting in the phone to manually remove it, that technique worked for me on T-Mobile USA.

That's exactly the technique that I have to use after a reset or a period of being in "Airplane Mode" (or otherwise out of coverage -- ie, in the subway).

The problem was that when I first unlocked my iPhone, I didn't even have voicemail service, and still got the red dot indicating that there was new voicemail. Of course, with no voicemail box to actually call into, I had no way of clearing it.

I added voicemail to my line, and after leaving a message for myself and then erasing it, the dot went away and stayed away until I either received yet-another voicemail message, or returned from an extended period of no coverage.

Thus far, I have found no other way to remove it after a reboot other than leaving myself a message and then erasing it (or waiting until somebody else leaves me a message). It's particularly annoying, since it comes back every time the phone is out of service (which in Toronto with the TTC happens fairly often for me during the day).

Time to go spend some time digging around at the shell prompt, I suppose....

    hmm

i'm on tmob in nyc, had the red dot since i unlocked a week ago, even though there were no messages, got a message, and it said +1, listened to that, wen back to red dot. read this thread, and called VM to delete all messages. it said 'there are no messages' at which point the dot went away. i didn't delete any, it just said there aren't any, and maybe that 'no message' trasmission did it..

who knows, wait until i get another message to test this out more

The appearance and disappearance of the red dot would have something to do with how your cellular provider sends out voicemail notifications. Some providers will send out a "No messages" notification every time you visit your mailbox, while others will only send out the notification if the status has changed (ie, you had new messages, and then deleted them).

The real problem seems to be that the dot comes on by default whenever the iPhone is reset, or whenever it reacquires cellular service after coming back from either airplane mode or an extended out-of-coverage period. It then does not go away until it actually receives a "No messages" notification from the cellular provider, which often only happens after dialing into your voicemail.

Of course, if you don't have voicemail service with your provider, there appears to be no way to get rid of the dot at all, unless somebody figures out where it lives in memory on the iPhone and writes an app/hack to reset it.
