They probably cannot release it on AppStore since it needs to use the music on the iPhone, and it seems like Apple does not want its music player to be touched. So it probably will need to be released under Installer/Cydia!!

They din't give up or anything. I think they want to release it through appstore.

Ya. It's definitely not going to be free. TCPMP was free but they charge for coreplayer.

I don't see the fuss, iPhone is perhaps the only phone that can play h264 content out of the box and very smoothly at that. H264 is the new standard for video compression and offers excellent quality, much better than divx or xvid, this is essentially the new generation like aac was for mp3.

Core specialises in h264 decoding with their coreavc software decoder which is much better than VLC and other ffdshow based decoders and even some hardware assisted decoders like PowerDVD and Nero. Even some PCs cannot play h264 content properly without lagging and frame drops if they don't have powerful dual core CPU's or at least or gpu acceleration for h264 like ATI HD or Nvidia 8 series like 8500/8600 GPUs offer. Previous series of GPUs from both ATI and Nvidia don't offer this hardware assist for instance even Nvidia 8800 doesn't.

iPhone on the other hand handles H264 content with its builtin player perfectly. For other platforms like Symbian and Windows Mobile which do not support h264 content out of the box coreplayer is an important tool to play h264 content, but even then unless the phone hardware is powerful enough it won't play well. So iPhone owners are lucky that Apple has provided the hardware and software to play h264 content out of the box. This requires a lot of processing power and also affects battery life.

The fuss is simply that most of the content available for download on the internet is not in h264 format, and most of us have a ton of content already in divX, xvid etc. Yes, there are tools to transcode, but that takes time, disc space, and degrades the quality.

Hey, its was not my intention to undermine coreplayer or having options to play divx/xvid/other formats. On the contrary Corecodec have a fantastic h264 decoder, perhaps one of the best. The more options people have the better, but Coreplayer and the company is mainly know for h264 playback and I was pointing out iPhone already does that out of the box.
