Default This maybe a POSSIBLE MMS Solution?

If someone knows of an idea to port Windows Mobile software over to the iPhone I have an idea....

As I have unlocked my Windows Mobile device, and have been running many, many, different variations of rom's on my device, and many updates of different software as well, I believe majority if not all WM Devices uses Arcosft MMS application to do the handling of all MMS capabilities. If someone knows how to port this software over and create it as an Native App. All we would have to do is input our carier information into the input fields, and off we go. It would pretty much be similar to using the mail app, but to recieve the multimedia messaging.

I believe the latest version of the software is 4.2.8.1, if anyone is willing to give it a shot, I can show where to find the software.

If only it was that simple...... If it was, all Windows s/w would have been ported to OS X by now.

You'd also have to hack the SMS app and the associated framework to treat the "trigger" SMS that prompts the device to download the MMS. Not easy.

Ok.... so not easy but possible right? Navizon was ported too iPhone, and Navizon was an WM device application. I think that the right minds would be able to pull this through.

As far as hacking into the SMS app, I dont think its all that of a need, the SMS software is built into the phone, the MMS software is not, as I had my mobile device with SMS capabilities, but no MMS capabilities because the cooker of the rom forgot to include it. This is if your speaking of the software on the WM device. As far as the software on the iPhone, I doubt it will be too much hacking needed as there are some native apps with notifications I.E. ApolloIM.

Another difficulty will also be to receive MMS messages. I don't know if it is known yet where in the firmware/baseband the system decides which package can "capture" the incoming or received data stream...

An MMS app would be easy on the iphone...

the problem is *the network* knows your phone cannot receive MMS. More technically, its the way your account was provisioned.

Two ways around this if you wrote an MMS app: 1) tell AT&T you have something other than an iphone 2) use the phone on another carrier

Dude, you misunderstood what I wrote.

The MMS's are stored on a server similarly to the way that email is stored on an IMAP server. Instead of the handset 'polling' the server for new messages, the server sends an out of band (OOB) SMS (an SMS that is not meant to be seen/read) with details pointing to the MMS message on the server. The phone then (typically) switches IAPs and starts downloading the MMS.

It's the receiving of the OOB SMS that might be difficult. The iPhone ALREADY has "issues" with non-normal SMS's...

As far as displaying an MMS it's just a SMIL container: even RealPlayer should display it - or else strip everything out except the picture.
