Default [Maps] What's the big deal about google's locate me?

So when I use the locate me feature it gets my area, only it is a HUGE area and not very reliable. Looking at the keynote video it zooms in down to the street for good ole' steve, but on my phone it zooms down to about a 3 mile radius. What gives? I don't live in some backwoods area or anything, this is a pretty big city I'm in.

If Im on wifi, it zooms down, but if im on edge, it gives me the general area.

    Pretty useful IMO

Well I'm on WiFi and after placing pins, I get just over 5 miles from one side to the other of the circle. That's hardly accurate.

it strongly depends on where you live, as the localization works with triangulation of the cell towers. So if you're in a megacity like NY with a lot of towers around you, you get a far more precise localization as somewhere in the countryside.
Also when wifi is activated, locate me checks skyhook database if there are mapped wifi spots around to get a more precise result.

And in the end not the radius of the locate me circle is important but the middle of it, as it shows your location.

With wifi activated, locate me shows me a location about 10-15meters away from my actual position... but i also live in downtown, Frankfurt.

Well it isn't quite a megacity, but I do live in a city of just under 100,000 people. I understand the middle of it that shows my location, but my circle should scale down with me when I zoom in. You see, the problem is that when I do zoom in to where I believe to be the middle of the circle, the 4 lines (NSEW) still appear on the sides of my screen yet when I move around the map they stay stationary which renders any sort of accuracy completely useless. What I want is for there to be some thing that actually shows where the center of the circle is, while zoomed in. I just want it to be like the keynote showed. Kinda sad that using locate me works better than apple's official service. It actually drops a pin.

yeah, i know what u mean. But as some kind of workaround, you can just set a pin to the approximate middle of the circle and zoom in afterwards.

I used it for the first time in Manhattan yesterday and it put me on the correct street corner.
Lots of wifi hotspots clustered together makes it very accurate.
