Okay, got it working, then after a while I got to a place that was not cached, it didnt download anything for a long time, then it started to, and after that it stopped working off of the cache completely and became slow again ;( I'm kinda missing MapsOffline, but you guys have been great and really patient!
It seems that writing to the cached DB somehow kills the whole thing. I wouldnt really mind making the cache read only if that helps?

Of cause you can start over. SFTP into
    /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/MapTiles
and delete anything inside. Then copy the custom map (like MapTiles.sqlitedb.nyc) inside this folder. Activate MapTiles.sqlitedb.nyc and use information in your SFTP client. Make sure the file has 644 permission, if not change it. Quit the SFTP client then.

Start Terminal (Mac) or PuTTY (Windows) and SSH connect to your iPhone, then issue
    cd /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/MapTiles/
    ln -s MapTiles.sqlitedb.london MapTiles.sqlitedb

Everything should work by then. Cause the directory MapTiles was empty (you deleted anything inside) it is set. The symlink is automatically set to 755.

BTW: the custom map acted same way on my iPhone. It shows the custom map and once you move around it tries to load Google data.

Awesome, I will give it a try, but first I think I need to download a new custom map, it does not seem to scale the same as the iphone maps. Does anyone know if Google maps on a standard browser is different from the mobile version, or if they have changed their maps recently? Thanks again for all the help, nice to be on the receiving end again!

Maps i got off with GMDL where slightly different then native ones.
you can see this easily becaus once you step outside the prefetched area (at least in manhattan area) you get slightly different background color and no outline on the roads.

Being a newbie with commandline in iphone,

i like to know if i did the symlink trick and hack the map.app cache, should i later want to remove the link completely, what are the steps to UNDO everything on this? i.e., how do i UNDO the symlink and ALL other changes so that there is absolutely no trace of this ever left?

    thanks.

Instead of downloading google maps, if there was a native app capable of reading TomTom or iGO maps it'd be awesome!

Hey guys, the offlinemaps.app just crashes on me, Im chatting with the developer to iron things out but till then I would really like to try the method we have been talking about. I can do it no probs now but when I try to download a new area it doesnt for a long time, then when it does it stops accessing the old cache. I'm thinking that as 644 lets the owner read and write, that it is letting Maps.app change something in the cache? What if I set the cache fill to 444? I wouldnt be able to add anything, but I wouldnt have to worry about it being deleted. I am a total noob when it come to UNIX so bear with me if this is just a bunch of poo.

edit: changing the permissions to 444 didnt help
edit: re doing the symlink then restores it, so perhaps there is a way to make the symlink a little more hardy?

Dhalilahma, thanks for the report on offlinemaps.app; i suppose it is not fully 2.0 compatible? when you talked to the author, did he say any expected update?

use the symlink trick is the hack i am trying to avoid; it will be great if an app with a GUI can do this so we do not need to SSH/putty into our iphone.

Update: i just saw the author's google code page. he mentions an italian guy alerting me about the crash of the app on 3G iphone and the fix was a permission problem with python. is this you, dhalilahma?

also, which version are you using that is crashing? cydia is reporting 1.3, but the author's google code page only lists 1.2?

    please post your feedback.

Not me, I tried the python fix and it didnt work. Also looking at offline maps, its not the greatest way of doing things. What it does (like MapsOffline) is copy the whole damn cache across everytime. The problem with that is it doubles the required storage, it takes ages and it will often crash (educated quess) The symlink method is much better, and I'm working on a method that will be the best of both. Unfortunately an app called Touchcmd is unavailable in my Installer/Cydia so it wont work for me at the moment I've got really bad luck or something). If you have access to that app just drop a post and I will give you the required steps.
