netuser: Add http://www.in7ane.com/iphone.xml (note the lowercase) as a source in Installer then install iLM from the Map Apps category

(seems to install/uninstall in the latest installer, although not thoroughly tested)

I've been looking for a good offline map solution and this comes pretty close.

I have iGo, iGuidance and TomTom maps for the Pocket PC. These maps are complete with POIs. I wish there was a map reader for the iPhone to use these maps.

    iPhone (OTB 1.1.1 / Currently 3.1)
    Unlock, activation, jailbreak: PwnageTool 3.1
    City Fido, Vancouver

Thank you very much - using the installer for the iLM application solves my problems . Another problem:

I tried to combine different maps into one, like having North America in zoom levels 6-9 and some cities at closer zooms. Therefore I downloaded and converted these maps for the iphone seperately for the iphone. Then I used a programm to merge the sqlite databases. However this procedure doesn't seem to work out. Inspecting the merged database I found that this one wasn't ordered by zoom levels but simply one database appended to the other.

Does anybody know wether this could be the problem, i.e. the Maps.app requiring the database to be in a specific order. And if yes, does anybody know how to solve it ?

SLedowski: Maps.app seems to lose cached tiles if you navigate away from them (you have to start in a location within the cache for the cache to be used as far as I can tell).

The order of the tiles/zoom does not matter as there is an index on the tile table. And if you have a cache of both the map and the satellite layer the tiles are not sorted yet you get both layers from the cache.

So, you do have to keep on switching individual maps if you want to use the cached tiles, until Maps.app starts checking the cache before fetching tiles by default.

Nice work on this, you beat me to it
....I'll add in gps support soon...stay tuned

Quick question, not sure if I missed something, but is there a reason the sqlite files get so huge? 550MB of map tiles turns into 2.3GB of sqlite? that seems a bit much to me. Is there any way to trim down the database at all?

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Default iLM 1.1.3 fix, GMDL update

Fix for 1.1.3, place maps in var/mobile/Media/Maps now (on the Installer source, http://www.in7ane.com/iphone.xml , thanks to jason-hk.com), if you want just the shell script that creates the links: http://www.in7ane.com/iphone/iLM-113fix.zip

GMDL updated to allow setting the hybrid layer (works on 1.1.3 only) and version now set to 4,17 (was 4,0 before, which still works, if 4,17 fails in 1.1.2 maximize the window and change back to 4,0 from 4,17). http://www.in7ane.com/psp/gmdl0.5.05a.zip

Sample FreeMap.co.il map on the Installer source.

    ---

Size issues, I have not had a chance to properly investigate, however the cause is either that the .NET jpeg/png compressor (since tiles are cut in 4 and re-saved) is worse than the one used by Google and others or that there is significant overhead in storing tiles in an SQLite database.

    hi
    really gr8 work dude,
i guess the search feature will only be available online to google servers
but in 1.1.3 it should be possible to perform the locate feature on customized maps, or am i wrong ?
    runnning 1.1.2..
and with the locateme.app (not googles) its not working for me, perhaps this app is clearing the map cache when hitting the Locate me button .. ?

As far as I know all locate type apps depend on having a network connection to retrieve the location data, so yes you would need a network connection. As for working with custom maps - it should work, the exception being that if it jumps outside of the stack of cached tiles Maps.app will loose track of the cache and start re-downloading (jumping within the stack of tiles should be ok, I think).

    And update on size issues:

The reason for the dramatic size increase seems to be the overhead of each tile having a PNG/JPEG header (this is why the SQLite file zips so well while the individual cut tiles do not - zip compression is done on a per file basis). The other reason for the overhead is the index and the extra columns in the SQLite database (which also compress well since they are text).

I do not have any ideas of how to deal with this, if anyone has any input I would certainly appreciate it.

    eg:

    original tiles: 13.8 MB
    GPSFS: 14.5
    cut tiles: 60.7
    SQLite: 83.7

    zip of SQLite: 18.1
