Default Laying out UI Elements - UITable not working right

It looks to me that the preferred strategy on the iPhone is to use a derivative of UITable to place strings, images and UI controls on the screen for user interaction. First off - can anyone confirm this or propose a more effective method?

Secondly, the problem I have encountered with UITable is that the following delegate

    Code:
    - (UITableCell*) table: (UITable*)table cellForRow: (int)row column: (int)col
is called with bad values for col so laying out a screen in a table with more than one column is problematic. Has anyone found a way around this?

I've not tried iPhone development yet, but something jumps out at me:

In cocoa, the table rows are normally represented by integers, but the columns by identifiers. Are you sure col is an int, rather than a UITableColumn* or something?

I may be barking up the wrong tree of course. Let us know how it goes!

Go browse through some of the iPhone projects at Google Code. Plenty of working UITable examples there.
