    Default iSwap v.2 pre-release

    Hey all,

I'm making available for download a pre-release version of my iSwap v.2. This one is scalable (unlimited screens, 4 configured initially) and is safer to use. It can be used to cycle through screens from 1-4 OR you can use the optional 'pick a screen' to directly jump to one of the screens you've set up.

The real release is going to have a theme and all of the Screen.plist files already set up so that a non-expert user can more easily get this working. Also, I'm writing up docs on editing the various files, etc. THIS version doesn't have any of that so if you think you'll need that sort of thing wait a few days and download the release version. This is mostly for expert users who want to give it a try and give me feedback.

When the 'full-meal-deal' version is ready later this week or on the weekend I'll post it for download as usual.

Anyway, the d/l is available off of my blog at:

    Cheers!

will it have an UI settings editor or will we still need to go through the files?

I have no problem with the files, but it would be real nice to have an easy way to edit/add/move around apps...

Not in this version. I agree, that would make things much easier.

Hey KennX, I was going to give it another shot but your descriptions are a bit fuzzy...
can you explain what you mean exactly with line 3 and 4 ?
    3. Make a symbolic link called DisplayOrder.plist to Screen1.plist
    4. Create a 'state' file called state1 (this tracks what screen it's on

Try to give examples of what to put in those files, because even if you miss a comma is not going to work. Create a "state" file?? Umm...lemme push the create a state file button Try being more descriptive, sometimes people cant read your mind.

Sorry... those are just things the PROGRAM does... not instructions that YOU have to do. I was just trying to say... okay, when you install this and run it the first time it does this... if you have iSwap v.1 it does that. Didn't mean for them to seem like steps you needed to follow.

Oh...so sorry for misunderstanding you You wrote "Make a symbolic link..." instead of "Makes a symbolic link..." By "make" I understand "you make" thats why I thought I needed to make thouse files

how aboutan installer.app package for this? After going through the 1.0.2 update, I really appreciate the ease-of-use it affords, and the way it watches for updates. I wish it was open source, but until something like it comes along, it's good enough. I'm no longer installing apps manually - just too much hassle.
    "Are you into S&M?"
"Well...I'm a Red Sox fan. Does that count?"
    Go Sox!

Since your DisplayOrder.plist files depend upon so many things (what apps are installed, what theme you're using, etc.) it would be problematic to make an updating installer.app package for this. What could be done is an initial install package which included a theme and all of the plist files generically done. But as far as updating, I don't think that'd work (at least without messing up anyone who'd changed themes) for example.

And yes, I think the installer.app is a great resource (although the fact that it's closed source and 'phone's home' is somewhat troubling). Hopefully, someone will replicate/surpass it in the open source arena.
