Default iPod touch dock edit... help?

I'm really new to all this SSH and plist hullabaloo, and all I really want to do is alter the SpringBoard plist to get the new dock found on the iPod touch, as explained here: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/27/a-hal...e-preferences/

But unfortunately, finding some sort of comprehensive guide to get to the point where I can properly edit this ONE facet of the phone is damn near impossible, as I have no idea what tools I need, and I have no idea how to properly use the plutil tool mentioned in the post (once again, due to lack of a comprehensive guide). I figured instead of trying to cobble together a set of instructions from various sources and screw up my phone irreparably, I figured just asking would be a safer bet. So please, what's the proper way to retrieve the file and the proper way to edit it?

And please don't just recommend SummerBoard or anything, that sucker slowed down my phone to an absolute crawl.

It was worth a shot, but it crashes every time I launch it. Best I can figure, I have something installed that these customization apps totally hate.
So yeah, back to trying to figure out how to do this whole plist editing thing.

It's really not very difficult. You download plutil from http://ericasadun.com/ftp/EricaUtilities/ and using SSH put it in /usr/bin on the phone. Then you can use it as a command.

EDIT: To use SSH, follow this guide.

For example, to make the dock tilted and reflective (as it is on the iPod Touch), you'd open a terminal (on the phone itself with a terminal application, or under Windows as PuTTY, or within WinSCP from the Commands menu), and issue the command:
    Code:
    plutil -i SBUseNewDock -v 1 /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist
(then restart Springboard). And if you don't like that and want to change it back, you issue
    Code:
    plutil -r SBUseNewDock /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist
The bigger problem as far as I'm concerned is: where to find the picture (.png file) of the iPod Touch dock? There are pictures available with the reflections of the default Touch icons built in, but that's not very nice if you want to use different icons... Where's the blank Touch dock???

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Getting an error after following your instructions:

    Code:
    zsh: permission denied: plutil
Did I do something wrong? I got everything installed in it that was recommended to me, and using Term-vt100 on my phone after placing these plutil and restart utility files in /usr/bin gave me this error. Attempting this through Terminal on my computer got me nowhere.

EDIT: Never mind, used chmod +rwx on the files and they work now.

As a sidenote, surprised that SSH instructions aren't stickied anywhere on this forum. Thanks for the help.
