I'd like to offer my thanks for your creation of this. While most of you will never see my apps (as they'll be solely inhouse apps), I very much wanted to use a consistent language in my UI. This is great, and I hope other devs also pay attention.

This thread is extremely important... just last week I was breaking my head cause some of the apps just didnt seem as "intuitive" as the apple stuff... so I thought "now here is a GOOD reason they dont have an SDK..."

I bet they will want some control over apps that are available, not only due to the obvious reasons of malware, etc but also for the interface.... what good is a wonderful base ui if apps are non-intuitive... and with all the devs out there used to other phones, making intuitive apps just isnt something thats a given...

This is a good guide, I agree that modeling after Apple's existing look/feel is great, but not to the point that it stifles creativity or "thinking different". In defense of the applications criticized in the guide, keep in mind these applications are extremely early in their development, most of them have only a dozen or so commits to svn. There is absolutely zero documentation on the UIKit, it's a completely "learn as you go" process developing an interface. Alot of the beautiful UI features you see in the included applications are based on the UIKit yes, but they aren't necessarily available in the UIKit as it ships. So developing a decent interface will invariably involve diving into Core Graphics directly.

I think what the guide provided was constructive criticism - I hope the app developers don't take offense. I realize that noone likes to be used as an example of what not to do, but this guide needed to be created, and early in everyone's development process is exactly the right time to do it.

Noone wants to stifle creativity, but I don't think anyone wants the disastrous multitude of interfaces we see under symbian or windows mobile. Details matter, even if we as developers wish it wasn't so. The current crop of developers have done an absolutely amazing job so far, but it doesn't mean everything is perfect.

thanks for the support i knew this guide had to be created early on. i've just go this to say to the developers:

don't feel bad if i used your app as an example of what not to do. u created ur own interface from scratch without this guide and i made it as a contribution to your software. u've done an amazing job so far in providing slick apps that really enhance the iphone.

since the guys at conceitedsoftware have almost perfected installer.app in version 1.8 (they effed up the bottom bar in 1.9) we know that great designs can come from UIKit. Installer.app version 1.8 really sets the bar for 3rd party apps. congrats!

best regards in updating your apps to look and feel like Apple apps!

iscanscan has been spamming the forums with his iPhone DVD converter software, can someone please ban him?

If you want a DVD to iPhone converter just get handbrake, (open source, free (obviously), and I personally think it's the best DVD ripping software available). If you like it, help support their project.

    Now, get back on topic.
