Default Installer.app NOT FREE for ever and maybe dangerous.

    As per dev wiki :

Installer.app Package manager, supports installing, updating and uninstalling applications. --WARNING: The creator of this application plans on profiting from it once Leopard and the iPhone SDK are officially released. It is closed source and not a community effort(except for the repositories). It could potentially have malicious code that could damage your iPhone.
This also includes the Launcher.app that can only be installed by Installer.app

I have uninstalled mine because it looks like I will need to get used to doing it on my own anyway.

FWIW there is another Launcher app here that looks good. I don't enough installed to give it a test drive but will be using it when the time comes.

There are plenty of people out there doing lots and lots of work and offering their efforts to the community. I will be supporting them.

    Disclaimer

My statements above are my thoughts of course, you can make your own. Both Installer.app and there Launcher.app are very well done pgms but its just not the way I wish to proceed.

once Leopard and the iPhone SDK are officially released
ok..so just uninstall it when the sdk is officially released because then there would probably be better things out anyways and it would probably be easier to install applications, but while there is no sdk the installer.app is an easy way to install applications that would need to be manually installed at the moment :/

This seems to be based on an alleged IRC chat conversation. While it could be true (and the app is certainly not open source) it's yet to be substantiated, so I don't think paranoia is warranted yet. It's sure faster than scp for grabbing the latest NES.app. :p

That said, "caveat emptor" still applies, particularly to new packages, which could potentially include malware. I'd suggest googling any new apps before installing.

Actually no, there was a warning on the GUI apps page. It has since been taken down for obvious reasons. The initial warning could be implied to almost all apps open or not. There is no need for a mas exodus and as stated in the original post, Installer.app is a very well done pgm.

If one followed the hints on their google page it is obvious that they will be charging for this later, if not thats great. But that being said the quality of the pgms right down to the icons is quite high. There is quite a bit of work going into them.

No need for people to freak out and I almost regret forwarding the information that I saw. But since it was on the wiki I assumed it was legit and important.

In regards to that irc conversation it looks slightly on the unprofessional side of the scope.
