(I had to remove my wikisrvd installation from Cydia first)

Thanks a lot for your description.

Thanks everybody for your kind words with regards to the guide - I really appreciate it.

I spent a few hours at work putting everything together [to my employers chagrin, if only he knew about it :-), after being utterly frustrated with not finding any instructions whatsoever about this awesome program - everything was either dated or had been deleted.

As far as I am concerned, this is what community help is all about, so please keep writing those guides to help others in need!

    Hi djpav,
thanx for your work. It inspired me to go back to a problem of mine.
First of all Wiki2Touch is working fine on my 3Gs! While I have no problems to see the German database incl. images, I have no change to get into the English one. When I installed your sample “articles.bin” file, I could change toward the the small file without having problems, however the big file didn´t want to show up. My iPhone only tells me “Language is not installed”.
I removed all Wiki2Touch files and installed the wikisrvd.deb as described. Then I installed the Wiki2Touch SBSettings. I restarted the phone and still the same message.
By now I am sure it has to do with the bigger size of the English database – but what can I do?
    Any suggestions from your side?
    Regards - Mukiwa

    Default URL can't open

    Hi,
    I am using a jailbroken iphone 2G with 3.0.
I installed the wiki2touch toggle, the svrd thing and the wiki2touch mini server all in cydia.

Then downloaded the german december 2009 dump from here:

Download files for your Wiki2Touch application

Used Total commander to move the file into the Media/Wikipedia/de folder.

Did the restart and everything (rights on 755 etc.) but when I wanted to load the url in safari it says it can't open. I have no clue what I might have done wrong.

Then I tried to do it your way step by step but terminal didnt find the tmp folder so I couldnt install the .deb file. The "cd tmp" input said there was no such folder even though I can browse it in TC or iphone Browser.
Really weird. As I said, I think my bin is already indexed and ready so I didnt use the programm fro that.

Any idea what the problem might be??? Is the bin file corrupted? I am downloading your link right now but it's taking forever...

First time I dont get sth worked out so I hope you guys have any ideas...I googled alot and did everything as described. Totally clueless why it's not working.

I had a similar problem with tmp.
Then I typed cd .. several times
    and found tmp.

    As for the articles file:
    Did you rename them to
    articles_de.bin and images_de.bin
    before copy to iphone at
    private/var/mobile/Media/wikipedia/de
    ?

    Default Not too lucky.

Thank you for the detailed guide. Unfortunately it does not work, and I think part of the problem is that neither cydia nor rock let you install the wiki2touch sbsettings toggle without installing the flawed server. I was successful with nearly everything except accessing my 4gig+ file using 127.0.0.1.

As an aside, oddly I am not able to see the wiki2touch toggle in sbsettings- only the name, and a blank placeholder where the icon should be so I can't actually see when its on or off. I know when its on by whether it can find 127.0.0.1 homepage versus when it gives me a "cannot connect to server" error and I can also turn it on/off using boss prefs, so its an annoying glitch, but not a big deal.

@ klausallofs: This is probably an oversight on my part, but you do NOT need to place the .deb in the tmp folder in order to extract/install it. The .deb file can be placed in ANY folder on your iphone, and as long you can navigate to it using terminal and execute the dpkg command, everything should be fine. Just put it in any folder you want and run the command. I picked the tmp folder because, well, the .deb is a temporary file that you execute and then delete. I will amend the guide to correct this. Also, in my experience I did not have to change permissions for the installed files, although it never hurts to set them anyway.

@skippy116: I can not see why you should not be able to install the wiki2touch toggle in sbsettings without installing wiki2touch from Cydia/Rock but even if that is the case, you can install the wiki2touch, install the toggle in sbsettings, and then uninstall wiki2touch from Cydia/Rock. Also, I have encountered the issue with the blank placeholder where the toggle icon is not visible and you can't actually see when its on or off: This is usually because the skin you use for your sbsettings does not support an icon for the wiki2touch toggle. Try changing the skin of your sbsettings.

I made a post when I joined earlier but it never showed up: it said it will show up once an admin has reviewed but it never did. So here I am posting it again.

Thanks, djpav, for making such a detailed and easy-to-follow guide. I'll just add my 2 cents based on my own experience. I've had wiki2touch since fw 2.2.1 and had only recently upgraded to fw 3.1.2 but it so happens that I found this guide before installing wiki2touch again on my iPod Touch 2nd gen.

    1) I followed the guide but found that I did NOT need to install the wiki2touch SBSettings toggle for it to work. All I had to do was to install the wikisrvd.deb and then transfer my articles.bin to the appropriate location on my iPod then reboot.

    2) I ran the indexer.exe at the command prompt with a few extra options and my articles.bin file was about the same size as the original wiki dump, about 5.4 GB, which is fine for me since I have plenty of room on my iPod. You can see extra options by typing: indexer -?

    3) Instead of iPhone Browser (which I've used in the past), I used iPhone Folders instead to transfer my articles.bin file. The transfer was quite fast: 5.4 GB took about 8-10 minutes. I also tried this on Mac OS X Snow Leopard but using iPhone Explorer and it also took about the same time.
    iPhone Folders (Windows only): http://iphonefolders.com/
iPhone Explorer (Windows and Mac): http://www.iphone-explorer.com/

    4) If you're running Mac OS X, you can use the Wiki2Touch transfer tool v0.60 for OS X (I couldn't find v0.65): http://dl.qj.net/software/apple/wiki...-mac-os-x.html

Default How do you get images

The purpose of the indexer is to scan the .bz2 file, re-arrange the content out of the xml data, and generate another file named 'articles.bin' and optionally 'images.txt' which contains the names of images but NOT the images themselves.
So how does one get the images? Which is the simplest way? Is there an already created English images.bin file one can download? I'm running the English database, can I use the German images.bin file from here Download files for your Wiki2Touch application ?

@pol3m: You are correct. You do not *need* the SBSettings toggle for wiki2touch to work. I would call it essential but not absolutely necessary. In my experience, sometimes during installation of wiki2touch, the server was not activated and having the SBsettings toggle provides you with the only way to make sure it is on (the green light is on). It's thus a good troubleshooting tool to have and, additionally, when I was running 3.0 and had serious battery drainage problems this was one more thing I could switch off in order to make sure that no processes were wasting my battery.

I have not used iphone folders but if the transfer speed is as fast as you claim, I would certainly use that over iphonebrowser (their functionality is the same). I would like to add your comments to the guide but I am limited to 10000 characters and I am not sure what to delete! Thanks for your comments!

@kikikakuku: Personally, I have not installed the images however the way to get them (as I understand it) is to:
    1) Run the indexer in the normal fashion to produce articles.bin and images.txt
    2) Run the ImageGetter.exe program located within the Wiki2TouchUtils_Win_065 folder. It will look for the images.txt and download the images listed in this file as an images.bin file.
    3) Upload the images.txt and the images.bin file onto your iphone in the same directory where the articles.bin file is located.

As I said, I have not done this (I couldn't even if I wanted to - my iphone is the 2G 8GB model - no space left). Try it and let us know if it works!
