I just installed "categories", an important point that is not stated is that in order to make it work properly one has to add another application: "poof".

MadB - I thought that for other newbie like me that do not know much about iPhone it would be important to put a note where you mention the must have application, btw it's up to you.

u dont really need poof though, if u have customise app, categories does the poofing for you automatically... i think

I had issues with "Services" where I would disable EDGE for instance, but any application that needed internet would simply override my setting and would "enable" EDGE. One workaround I found was to add a single letter after APN name in EDGE settings which would "disable" EDGE, but that's really an elegant solution.

Then I came across a similar program, but with a few more options. It's BossPrefs by Big Boss, and you can enable/disable EDGE, Wifi, Bluetooth, SSH and any email account that you have, all on one screen.

I'd love a "June 2008" update to this list. Would others perhaps post your "must-haves?" Thanks!

    These should be on there:
    Fring (VoIP client)
NemusSync (sync Google Calendar to the iPhone calendar)
    iPhoneVideoRecorder (much better than Showtime)
    Snapture (hugely improved camera)
BossPrefs (start and stop services, hide icons)
LocateMe, Navizon (GSM location apps, often more accurate than Maps)
Docs (from BigBoss: view PDF, Excel, text, and other types of documents saved on the phone)
Tris (Good and pretty Tetris game)
EDIT: Taskbar Notifier (displays icons for new mail, sms, missed calls in the status bar)

    and some useful system utilities:
SysInfo (list processes, restart and respring)
    Terminal
HardwareInfo/BBInfo (info on everything or just the baseband)

Is the original list updated at all? Last update was in March, but the poster madB is still active... The list could do with an update: it still says that SummerBoard is useful for scrolling (which is built-in since 1.1.3), and still lists Listen (discontinued about half a year ago).

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).
