Mozilla does have a mobile browser project called Minimo. That would be the place to start.

I have used minimo in some palms but it sucks, and all you people must accept that Firefox is better than safari

Firefox Rulez, its the only thing that the iPhone needs
    to make it perfect

Have you ever used Firefox in a Mac OS environment? It has a ton of memory leakage and is quite unstable. Yes, it's the best browser (by far) for Windows--but the iPhone doesn't run Windows, it runs OS X. :p That said, I don't use Safari, either--my browser of choice is Camino, a OS X exclusive browser built upon the same Gecko engine that Firefox uses. I personally have nothing against Mozilla, but I can assure you that Firefox--assuming, of course, that someone somehow manages to recode and compile the app to run on the the iPhone's ARM processor (and adds touchscreen support along the way)--will never be a match for the iPhone's native Safari. Don't forget, Safari has been completely reprogrammed and optimized to work specifically for the iPhone, and includes many browser-exclusive elements that make the user-browser interaction incredibly easy (ie. calling clicked numbers, full page rendering + zooming, even large, iPod-style buttons, although those are not commonly used). Even a highly modified version of Firefox couldn't offer what Safari does. The iPhone simply isn't the place for Firefox.

We mustnt forget that even if opera is better than safari (i dunno if it is or isnt), opera on a cellphone sucks and safari rules...

even if firefox on windows is better than IE, it doesnt mean that a mobile firefox would be any better than pocket ie, which ocmpletely sucks....

Firefox's mobile offering, according to the user 2 posts above sucks, so why would it be good on an iphone?!

    Lets put it to rest...

iPhone Safari is actually based on WebKit (http://webkit.org/), and is arguably at least as good as Gecko, though that's not an argument that I'd like to promote.

My Point is: we can promote a "better" browser for the iphone, to replace safari, but to assume that it would be based on Opera, or Firefox is futile at this stage...

Since FF would have to be re-written for the iphone, it could come out crappy and much worse than safari...

if anyone has specific improvements to be done to safari, they can suggest that and hope apple listens, or setup a project to develop an alternative browser for the iphone, I'm VERY skeptical, though, that any new browser development would come NEAR to safari in the short term...

We are here discussing as if somehow imaginary-firefox would be better than safari.... stupid argument...

I've used pretty much all the major smartphones for some length of time. I guess I don't understand the statement that safari isn't up to par. Far as I can tell, it's far far better than any other Cellphone browser I've used - including minimo.

What would you be looking for in a "better" browser? Anything beyond plugin support? Because if the rendering engines are the same, it seems far more feasible to add plugin/extension support to iphone webkit.

I use Camino and it works pretty well.

It's native OSX and also runs on the geko rendering engine, so it seems like a logical replacement for Safari compared to the burdensome Firefox.

I would love to see the end result of this have some more "browser" features such as file saving, maybe integration with MobileFinder to open media files or something.

    Just an idea.

right, so to add more features such as a file-save, lets go ahead and port a whole other webbrowser to a cellphone.... well, no one has ever made a decent browser for a mobile phone before safari, but oh heck, for shits and giggles lets just go ahead and make a better one just so we can include "save as" functionality....

seriously... this is ridiculous.... plus, mobilesafari already includes some form of plugin support (see pxl extension) we just dont know how much we can get from it, or how... (for now)....
