ok, I guess no answer == yes to repawn? doesn't seem to be an issue anyone else is concerned with since I can't find it when searching.

so thanks. I just wanna say, as a noob, it sucks when your post doesn't get an answer even for a simple yes or no question. Noobs like me have little to no knowledge and while common sense might say one thing the answer may be much simpler and better than having to reinstall firmware and all the apps one might possess on the phone. Someone who knows alot might look at my original post and say to themselves "what a dumb question, of course repawn" but then not respond. Just to respond yes would be a kind thing to do because I could at least then be reassured that I'm not wasting my time and losing my info, again, when the answer could perhaps be much simpler and better.

    Well...
if your post does not get answered then it does not mean that people are ignoring you. Unlike what you said, it's not a simple yes or no.
I have absolutely no idea what to tell you because I don't know, I'm not sure.

    Should you repawn ?
Answer: I don't know. I hate to tell you something when I am not sure myself

Are you using a different camera application, like CameraPro or Snapture? They don't save thumbnails.

Or are you talking about camera roll pictures that were not backed up but somehow restored by iTunes (probably from one of the backups it makes)?

In other words: how did these pictures get on your phone?

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

ok, thanks. so sorry if I came across like a jerk, I don't mean to.

These were pictures that were backed up with itunes, just regular pictures that I took with the iphone. I had messed my phone up somehow and restored to 1.1.4 using itunes. I created a custom ipsw with winpwn and then restored to that using itunes then synced with itunes to get my pics back. Now the camera roll shows empty thumbnails for pictures that exist on the phone. I've synced and resynced but the thumbnails are still blank.

I also have pictures that get synced to my iphone from other folders in my computer that have no problem with the thumbnails. A thought occurs... I cannot find where itunes stores my pictures that I take with the phone. If you can tell me where these pictures are stored maybe I can move them to a different folder on my computer and they will sync to the photos folder "my pictures" instead of camera roll. maybe??

    anyway, thanks again very much,

    Budsalinger

iTunes stores the backup in the form of a number of MDBACKUP files (some unknown type of archive) which you could find in your Windows profile, in the subfolder Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\. That won't be any use. Why don't you just connect your iPhone to your computer, open My Computer, double-click Apple iPhone and copy its contents to your computer (e.g. to My Pictures), so you'll have all the pictures on your hard drive and they will be synched to the iPhone photo album the next time.

Here is what is going on...

(Assumtion) - you restored your phone and then restore from that back up (talked about above). When you restore, the iPhone is an OS and it restores the home folder and some user files. During that restore, the camera application can get messed up and when you take a photo, it gives you that blank white photo.

Here is the solution: make sure you have all your information store on your computer (not just in the back up iTunes takes). Then, restore your iPhone and when you get to the new iPhone screen - set up as a new phone. Then, sync your information as a new phone. Your camera application should work perfectly now. Then, go to your iTunes preferences and delete your iPhone back up (the old one). Then re-sync your iPhone and then the new back up should be good to go.

    Here are the facts:
    - Apple has records of which iPhones have been activated through AT&T. They can bring up this information based on your serial number or phone number AT THE STORE or OVER THE PHONE

I hook up my iphone to the computer and all I can do is look at the photos on my phone I cannot copy/paste them. Going through My Computer/Apple iPhone on my windows computer I see the list of photos but I can't do anything with them except look.

Am I right to guess that I need to ssh into the phone? I've never done this because I don't have a wireless router. Is there another way to grab these files onto my computer?

    thanks

I think you're telling me to restore again, no problem. But if you can answer my pre-edited question and this edit I'd be grateful. Is there a way to back up my contacts then restore them as they are (outside of itunes)? when I restore I will otherwise need to bring them to my phone from the sim and spend at least an hour combining peoples home and cell numbers and just basically reorganize my contacts which is a huge pain in the ass.

    Much ass grassy ass

Using iPhone PC Suite > Save the "AddressBook" folder to your computer
It is located here in your phone:

    Code:
    /var/mobile/Library/
Copy it back after you restored and you'll see all your contacts as it was before.

You can also copy the whole Library folder as it contains all your apps preferences, mails, contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc etc...

where would I enter that code? I downloaded pc suite version 1.0.7.2 if that means much. I think I backed up my contacts but the task took less than a second to complete so I'm sceptical that it backed up anything at all. it's an 83 KB file that was created.

but again, where would I enter that code? I don't see a section in pc suite that would accept such a code.

also, it only backed up 34 out of 50 camera roll photos. the ones it didn't back up are the ones that have no thumbnail photo in the camera roll.
