Default Barcode Reader Using iSight / Phone Camera

I am really interested in using the iPhone's camera as a bar code reader. We are currently using a Symbol PDT8100 PocketPC for our inventory control software.

Here's an open source implementation that is Cocoa based and uses the iSight camera in Macs. Can anyone get this to work? If we can get this to work, this will be a much cheaper alternative to buying handheld PocketPCs. (I tried it with my MacBook Pro; it works pretty well.)

With the camera? I am not sure that would even work...

Sure it will. It just takes a picture and then analyses it detecting the barcode.... The link provided shows it in action.

It would require porting, but not exactly the toughest challenge in the world.

It works on a mac iSight, which is VGA, it should definitely be possible with the iphone camera, which is 2 mpix.

I actually tried looking into it but didn't get too far because of deadlines at work.
It might be kinda slow, but it's possible.

I've had trouble getting decent focus on the iphone cam... Couldnt use it to take pictures of business cards, for example....

If anyone has better luck I guess it could work, but for me it looks like a longshot...
