Aside from all the well known advantages of Visual Voicemail, one that a lot of people might overlook...

To run an app such as this, it would use airtime to record the message and play it back. I don't think that's a problem for everyone, but it is for a lot of people.

I understand that this is to all be done in the same fashion as Visual Voicemail.

There is a service, app, dashboard widget, and code you can enter in the phone, and go to a website for visual voicemail. I forget what it is called but they also make an SMS dashboard widget... The advantage is, that if you have one of those plans such as MyFaves (unlimited calling to a certain number) than you get free visual voicemail, free calls to them, I don't know, tough to explain.

shit all i want is a simple answering machine....

wait 3 rings, answer play previously recorded message, beep ... record 30 seconds, hang up and save to a mp3 file so i can listen to later in the answering machine app...

no web interface or anything like that...

why? cause im in the caribbean and i get free incoming, but calling their crappy voicemail that doesnt work for shit costs me 30 cents a minute, so if my phone can answer and reord i'd be estatic... hell ill pay for this application in a snap!!!

    * Answering incoming calls after the predefined time
    * Playing one of the prerecorded responses to the phone line
    * Recording a voice message
    * Pick up and Hang up are possible at any time while AM is answering the call
    * All voice messages are stored locally and are available at any time
    * A special view allows you to manage recorded voice messages
    * Caller phone number along with the date and time of the call are stored

I know that the network provided Voicemail feature does it, but this is better as it can get you something like "visual voicemail" on any network and you dont need to pay charges to the network provider for it. Moreover, it is easily customisable.
Should be do-able. Samsung has it on a few of their phones.....the D900 for sure.

I heard of a service a long time ago called CALLWAVE.. its supposed to be the same as visual voicemail and it works on any network... it also can transcribe your voicemail into a text message or email... and you can add a widget to your computer that allows you to manage your voicemail directly from your computer(listen to them, delete them and such)... what I thought was really cool was the fact that you can screen your calls in real time just like an answering machine, you can listen to the voicemail while the person is recording it and decide wither or not you want answer it after all... not sure if its any good and Im not really going to research it now... but just throwing it out there.. problem is that I think you either have to pay for the software or there is a monthly fee... I hope someone can make an app like this for us...

Keep in mind the audio route for calls is not driven by the main processor, so no matter what you do on a software running on the main processor, you will never reach the audio data for the calls.
Using AudioToolbox will play a sound on a speaker. While the endpoint maybe will hear what you are playing, since the speaker is near the mic, everyone else will do and also the ambient sound will be heard.
Unless you modify the baseband firmware, which is the processor who deals with that, the solution you are chasing won´t be properly done.
