With all the great 3rd party software that is getting available i wonder why no one are working on an MMS application? I assume that is one of the most wanted features for European users at least.

An MMS application shouldn't be very hard to create since MMS is pretty simple.

The only problem would be to hack the existing SMS application to launch the third party MMS application if it detects a binary SMS with MMS header. Considering that springboard was hacked, i guess that is not an impossible task?

The MMS application itself would be pretty simple - download the file in URL specified in the SMS notification, and display the text/image from the downloaded file (SMIL).

Maybe because MMS is the biggest waste of time the mobile telecoms industry has come up with (and that's waying something!) and really, it's just a way to expunge tremendous amounts of money from their customers just to have the option of sending a crappy, low resolution picture (which would get lost in the iPhone's high-res screen!) and possibly some dreadful MIDI music to go with it?

Most modern phones (including the iPhone) can send and receive e-mail. Get with the times

You're absolutely right. But what about those individuals sending you MMS? Can expect the world to own an iphone or email capable mobile device.

No it's not. It made it possible to send pictures many years ago, while email was not available on any phones. A poor solution is better then no solution. I personally don't use it much, and would prefer email, but there are REALLY few phones with good email support, including iphone.

The problem is that 99% of the phones in Europe have support for MMS, and it's the only method users use to send pictures.

I've had email-capabilities on my phones since the 90's. Since MMS was introduced, I think I've sent 5 at most. And maybe recieved 20 or something like that. Not only is it a waste, but it's so expensive that it's just not worth it.
Of course you could just wait untill the iPhone comes to Europe, and then pull out the mms-app from there and load onto your own phone. If it comes with MMS that is.

I dunno but many of us have unlimited mms, so we use it alot to send pics,vids, and voice recordings. also you can send MMS to email addresses and vice versa. it's much quicker and cleaner

MMS is by no means a waste. It's very handy to be able to send a photo directly to someone's cell phone with a few clicks. I've not found an easy way to do that with my iPhone yet. I tried emailing a photo to a friend's SMS/MMS address once and got a bounce (sent it from my computer using the same mail account and MMS address and it worked, go figure). Most people don't have email on their phones, which is why MMS is handy.

Also, that stupid viewmymessage.com website that ATT tells you to visit when you receive an MMS is a pain in the ass. Nine times out of ten, when I type in that URL in Safari on the iPhone, it won't even load. Then I have to remember a cryptic username and password? Shitty solution.

Don't forget the fact that there is no MMS included in the data plans for the iPhone. My hope is that Apple is still working on an MMS solution and will make it available in an update, at which time we'll see an update in the data plans from ATT for included MMS.

MMS is great for me, as i can send MMS free on my tarriff when roaming... SMS costs me 40p each time, while as MMS doesn't cost me anything (comes out of my huge bundle!)

MMS is a must really for either an apple update or a application.. i know nothing about writing apps, so can't help, but i'll offer my support for one being made

A friend of mine works at the company that invented camera phones and I assume also the MMS protocol. When I asked him why they just didnt use smtp instead of creating a whole new protocol he couldnt answer me.

smtp is obviously where phones should be... MMS is pointless. It just sucks that MMS is the standard on everyone else's phones.
