Third party apps and iPhone stability
I love my iPhone and love this community for opening it up to third party apps.
Unfortunately, with opening up the iPhone to third party developers, we come across some "good" and some "bad".
Personally, I've found that overloading your iPhone with third party apps slows it down or worse creates instability. When i was on 1.0.2, the safari browser would repeatedly crash on me and the user inferface slowed down (not sluggish, but I noticed it).
I recently restored to firmware 1.1.1 and I'm happy to say, the interface was fast again, safari hasn't crashed on me once, and I get the WIFI music store.
Unfortunately however, i just installed Customize 1.19 and it has slowed down the user interface.
So, on that note. I'd like to start a thread on software that's stable, compatible, safe on their own or in combination with other third party software.
Summerboard 3.0b1-1 - works great on its own
Summerboard 3.0b1-1 AND Customize 1.19 - Crashes 4 times initially, but afterwards seems to work. The addition of Customize has slowed down the user interface.
iPod2 0.0.1 - Installed fine and Uninstalled fine as of December, 8, 07
iPod3 0.0.1 - Installed fine
Search 1.05b - Works great, no performance issues or adverse effects on the gui
SMSD 0.07 - Works great, no performance issues or adverse effects on the gui
SysInfo 1.0b - Works great,
Taskbar Notifier 0.8 - Works great,
*** I will update this first page if this thread gets to page 3 ***

This is funny: you're whining about stability problems from 3rd party apps but you were still using FW 1.0.2. Now THAT makes sense. *LOL*
Little hint: I'm running 4(!) "pages" of native apps on my fw 1.1.2/4.02.13_G/bl 4.6 iPhone and the ONLY native app so far causing some trouble was Summerboard (which I'm not using anymore for the time being because it was very likely responsible for random dropped network connectivity). So far, no problems at all with native apps, one or two sometimes crash and reboot the phone but nothing else happens.
So maybe it is time to update to fw 1.1.2, especially since a lot of new apps are actually written for 1.1.2.
Your current 1.1.1 firmware should also work much better with 3rd party apps than your old 1.0.2. but why not go the whole way and update to 1.1.2?!

Yeah, 1.0.2 crashed a bit...but when you haven't seen or updated how are you to know? Besides, at 1.0.2 it was working and I didn't want to screw it up. Thankfully the 1.1.1 update was a breeze. If there's any advatage of going 1.1.2 I'd do it, but from what I've read it ain't much...correct me if I'm wrong.
So you've never noticed a performance decrease to the GUI after installing (ie. 4 pages of apps)???

When I was on 1.02, the Safari browser/Google Maps would constantly crash, and this was LONG before I jail-broke my iPhone. While its certainly possible for 3rd party apps to slow the phone down, it's very hard to say what the culprit is (it might be Apple), or even if the phone really is slower than it used to be.
We are all very susceptible to suggestion. Take, for instance, Erica Sadun's article on the "volume tweak" for the iPhone. After measuring the volumes with a sound meter, she seems to conclude that this tweak was a placebo of sorts.
But if there really are crashes and slowdowns, I recommend checking the drive space by typing "df -h" in the terminal. My phone acts very funny when the OS partition gets close to filling up. JLA

I was just marveling today at how incredibly stable and fast my phone is, despite the fact that it's jailbroken, Applications are moved to the media partition, about 80 third party apps are installed, and only about 100MB of free space at any given time! Plus every portion of the artwork even in the native apps has been modified.
I agree wholeheartedly that 1.1.1 is much more stable than 1.02.
I previously had a Treo 650, and it crashed pretty often, even with minimal aftermarket stuff. The iPhone is a huge improvement to me.

he's right, search and you will find the answers you are looking for. the processor was increased from 400mhz to 412.

iPhone is actually runnning an ARM 1176 JZF-S Processor, which has a 630Mhz speed, and even varies up to 700Mhz or more (depending on implementation)
but apple just allow 410Mhz from the 630Mhz .... because it is unnecessary to
try uninstalling apps that you dont really need and update it to 1.1.2 and you'll find the overall performance better
maybe apple will opens the complete processor to us when sdk comes out ^^

great info up above. I didn't know you could get the free space in terminal (*not a unix guy).
As for stability...hands down 1.1.1
I'm surprised that so many of you don't seem to get any slow downs.
I'll say that right after I virginized, and updated to 1.1.1, the phone was very responsive. Whether it has to do with the extra third party apps or not...it has slowed down a bit. Some days trying to open up SMS takes a while...uninstalling SMSD seemed to solve this for me.
On a separate note, seems that memory available on my iphone starts at approx. 93MB free right after a restart, and after a while drops to about 86MB on average.
It doesn't continue to drop below 86MB free, but I wonder what is taking up resources over time.
anyhow, great info above...and absolutely right on 1.1.2
They overclocked the stock 400/100mhz speed by a small bit
