www.s4iphone.com has a connection to skype you can use. It gives access to your skypeout account, but as far as I know there is no way to use a skype-in number on an iphone yet, so you can't go so far as to cancel your cell plan and use the iphone as a wifi-only phone (which I think would be awesome!)

As I posted here: http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthre...light=truphone
I'm in the process of porting a SIP/RTP/VOIP app to iPhone and am interested in talking to anyone with CoreAudio, AudioQueue or UIKit knowledge.
I'm a generous guy, iPhone's and Champagne all round for people who can help out!

Yes, I am serious.

Does this mean it is not going to be open source (and probably not free either)? I will have to write my own then.

s4iPhone needs to call you back to establish a conference call between you and the person you want to call. You need a Skype client on the iPhone (unlikely), or a SIP client + SIP server with a Skype bridge to use Skypeout without voice cell plan.

Truphone.com is free (unless you're calling a land line, or calling from a land line, in which case you have local call origination and termination charges), just like Skype.
The jury is still out on whether the iPhone client source will be FOSS or not, I hope so. Certainly we'll be upstreaming the changes necessary for the port into the Sofia CVS tree.

Personally, the only thing I need is making calls to land lines and other mobiles. Receiving calls is free, so I don't need SkypeIn or comparable services.
IM+ is useless to me because 2xSkypeOut is much more expensive than simply making the call directly from the iPhone (in Switzerland), even without voice plan.
I have a couple of questions since I'm not familiar with truphone:
- The truphone.com client is closed source, right?
- Are their protocols open, so everbody can write a client?
- Are you affiliated with them?
- With your client, will I be able to connect to any SIP gateway; to my own Asterisk server?
Thank you!

* Yes, the current N-series client is proprietary.
* Go look at Truphone.com if you want to know more about Truphone. We offer VOIP<->VOIP calls for free across a MVNO, and great rates on land or mobile terminated calls worldwide.
* Yes, I work for Truphone ^^ :-)
* Yes, our protocols are open, SIP, RTP, Asterisk etc. Does this mean everything is open? No, of course not - we have a carrier-grade network and have issues such as service level and cross-network billing agreements, anti-fraud and anti-terrorism laws etc. to deal with, it's not your 'home asterisk box attached to an ADSL line' setup!
* Yes, in theory anyone could write a Truphone client, our API is open and we are standards-based. If you want to implement a Truphone client, come talk to us and we'll give you a job :-)
