Is it possible to turn to go to vibrate mode by software alone, bypassing the hardware switch?

My T-mobile Dash would switch between ringer/vibrate based on whether I had a calendar event scheduled, which was quite handy. No need to remember to turn the ringer on/off every day for work/school

About the only thing I miss about the Dash...

My old WinMobile device did this as well... but quite badly. Whenever I had a simple all-day reminder like "garbage collection day", or even a simple all-day birthday reminder appointment, the phone wouldn't ring that day.
And if I remember correctly, WM had this bug to sometimes not leave this mode.

So, in general: quite useful, but only if there's an optional checkbox on appointments that would say "occupied" or "do not disturb", not by default please.

Good points. iPhone iCal doesn't seem to have the option to set your status as "Busy" for particular appointments.

In that case, a standalone app that allowed you to specify simple rules like "turn ringer off Monday through Friday, 9AM - 5PM" would be the next-best-thing.

this was called "MagicProfiles" on my Sony Ericcson and was the best app EVER!!!!

it went further:
- setting ringtone profiles (or even rejections) based on time;
- when an event was in the callendar
- even special settings based on keywords in calendar (e.g. key word "flight" switched to flight mode)
- and the best thing: based on cell-tower-id

I would pay immediately for this if it would exist...

I will defintely also pay for something like this. any developers interested?
