[Release] Offline Wikipedia browser
We've been several working on this lately, and came up with different solutions.
Well, here's mine: http://trac2.assembla.com/iPhonePedia/wiki
It was half-working for some time but now it's quite fine, with a good search function, a nice rendering and a very decent parsing.
It's a PHP-based version, which basically means the installtion is a bit painful, but I'm convinced installing a local PHP stack will soon start to be useful for other applications.
I'm terribly sorry about the delay, it really was a bit more difficult than planned when getting into the details...
Don't hesitate to submit a ticket for bugs or feature requests if you have suggestions!

A Wikipedia offline version also needs the capability to be synced up with the most recent version periodically. A single snapshot becomes increasingly out of date.
I personally don't mind if an encyclopedia is a couple months old, but anyway, I provide all the info to generate the correct datafiles based on any dump downloaded from download.wikimedia.org - not necessarily wikipedia, I just tested with wikibooks and it's working fine, except that there are many interwiki links, and I don't support these (yet?).
Also, I just corrected a bug in the indexer who mixed up some folders, so if it didn't work for you you can try again with the latest file.

For those who were scared by the installation procedure, it is now much lighter and I even hope to distribute the app through the ModMyIphone installer source.
I also provide torrents for the English and French datafiles.
Don't hesite to request others.
I have also polished a bit the parser since some TOCs were badly formatted. All the pages I've been testing today render quite beautifully now.
I hope to support Math markup quite shortly, depending on the size it would require (images would be generated at indexing time).
Timelines are probably moch harder but I'm looking into it.
Man, having the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy in your pocket really is a special feeling!
I advise you to check out Tom's version as well, which is very nice-looking too: http://haukap.net/
How doese this work ? the whole encyclopedia is offline in Iphone ? hwo much space doese it take ? It is quite amazing to see this.
When will it be on installer so that i can check
Would it be possible to make it even easier to install??
I now distribute the bzcat executable within the webapp so the webapp is now only one directory to copy!
You still need Apache, PHP and Perl unfortunately.
Also, I am uploading torrents for es, it, pl and de at this very moment, so datafiles should be just a directory copy for most of you as well!
i have installed your wiki package and run your script makeindex.pl so i have the german version. all files copyed to the destination folders.
i can make a search maybe alen. i get some results, but when i want to see the details and click to the article i get the message: Sorry, could not find article ´Alan Smithee´

when i run the makeindex.pl i get the following message:
is the erorr "die syntax für den dateinamen..." normal ?
english: "the syntax for the filename, foldername or the data medium is wrong"

If the index file is not sorted then it's normal that the full-text seaerches work but not the actual locating of the article (the php script assumes the file is sorted, because I'm doing a dichotomy scan).
Just a guess but it may be that when executing the script the Windows 'sort' executable is picked up instead of the GNU/Unix/Cygwin one.
I have uploaded the correct executable on the wiki (sort.exe). Try to copy it in the same folder as the perl script.
MAke sure you have the latest indexer.pl as well, but I don't think I made any change recently.
Also, I provide the German version as a torrent on the site. Check out http://trac2.assembla.com/iPhonePedia/wiki/DataFiles. Normally I'm online all the time.
For all you folks I also uploaded the torrent for nl, pl, es, in addition to the existing en, fr and de.
I'd like to support wikitravel as well. Anyone knows if they provide dumps?
