[Installer] v3.1 (Nullriver) always crashing, why? strange CrashReport!

hi,

from one day to another my installer is crashing always, it became unusable. how could i solve this problem? :confused:

i have an unlocked 1.0.2 iphone that i used one of the very 1st software hacks to unlock... it was before anysim came out... i had to manually do it using a lot of commands (PACAY, iBrickr, Easy iUnlocker, unlock-fast.pxl etc) ... it's been a while ago.

anyway ... the iphone worked perfectly, since yesterday. now my installer is broken, it always ends up wih this error message (in /var/logs/CrashReporter/). i searched this forum and google too, but didn't find an answer resp. solution. every help is very much appreciated!!!

I have not been on 1.0.2 for a while. Just checked Nullrivers website. I am not sure if the new installer version is supposed to work with 1.0.2. If you wanna give it a try, I still have the old installer version that I used when on 1.0.2.
If you wanna give it a shot, pm me. I'd give you a download link. Maybe you can replace SFTP the new Installer.app with the old one, make it work then and do the upgrade procedure.
On my 1.1.4 installer 3.1 is working.

As I said, I dont have an 1.0.2 iPhone, so I could not test it.

i know of heaps and heaps and heaps of people getting this problem, i have had about 40 emails and 20 pm's about it. so you are not alone :)

My theory is (and this is just what I think) is that installer 3.1 is now totally designed to run under the user mobile, the user mobile was introduced in 1.1.3. I say this because I have had people with iphones from 1.0.1 - 1.1.2 and all of them face this problem. Upgrading to 1.1.3/4 seems to fix it. So there is my evidence

EDIT: and it also looks like installer 3.1 requires frameworks which are only present in 1.1.3/4.

And a lot of people on pre-1.1.1 also need to virginize in order to update. But the easiest method to virginize is in the i.unlock.no installer source :P

Manually replacing and chmod 755'ing an old version of installer will work. you can (if you don't have SSH access) try running AppTapp Installer from iphone.nullriver.com, or try installing it thru iBrickr with the PXL package management system

I strongly advise that you upgrade to 1.1.4. It has a lot of bugs ironed out since 1.0.2, and also contains many many new features. but make sure you restore to 1.1.4 and not update. this will clear all the crap out of your system from installed apps etc. also, set up as a "new phone" instead of restoring the backup in iTunes. I know it's annoying... but otherwise some things can go really strange. once i accidentally restored from a backup after a restore, and had to re-restore in order to fix it :P. There are many programs, such as iPhone PC Suite, that can do iPhone backups for you without screwing up iPhone like an iTunes one can. but make sure you virginize before upgrading if you are required to.

But when you are on 1.1.4, I recommend installing the "1.1.4 Cookie Fix" which can be found here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/show...hlight=cookies

yes, i already understood that it makes sense to upgrade my FW. but -as i said- it seems that with a working installer it would make my life much easier because i think i have to virginize my iphone before and this looks quite easy withe the tools from http://iphone.unlock.no/#already-unlocked-virginize

so ... is their any chance to get my installer working again by any 'dirty hack', i.e. by chmoding some files?

question: assuming i have fiddled around this installer problem and virginized the phone, can i restore 1.1.4 FW directly via iTunes i.e. without 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 FW restoring (http://iphone.unlock.no/#recovery-restore-mode)?

last question:assuming i'm on 1.1.4 FW then i do have to do the activate and unlock as normal (http://iphone.unlock.no/#Bypass-Acti...nd-Jailbreak)?

I would SFTP to the iPhone and delete the Installer 3.1. As secretmrx said, some of the incompatibilities seems to be caused by differences since 1.1.3 and missing Frameworks in 1.0.2. SFTP an older Installer.app to Applications, chmod 755.
Then do the Virginize via i.unlock.no.

Seems to me that after virginizing you could restore to 1.1.4, but i.unlock.no says restore to 1.1.1 or update to 1.1.2...

If I were you I would restore to 1.1.1 to be on the safe side then restore to 1.1.4 and Jailbreak/Activate/Unlock.

First get the firmware files for 1.1.1 and 1.1.4, download it to your Mac/PC.

Restore to 1.1.1 (I am not sure (aka never tried to restore from viginized 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 myself)


Download iLiberty (for Mac or Windows) then here: http://theiphoneproject.org/index.ph...c=select&id=14

Put your iPhone in DFU mode
1. hold power + home
2. in a few sec, red slider appears, continue holding til phone reboot
3. count to 6
4. let go power
5. keep holding home until itunes detect it or if you hear a connection tone (like plugging in a usb device on Windows), let go of home.

Screen should be black all the time beginning at step 3

If itunes say it need to check for "... version on the server..", let it check, after that you will see the restore button. shift-click restore (Option-click on Mac) and select the 1.1.4 FW you downloaded in step 1.
At the end it will be restored to 1.1.4 locked.

To Jailbraek, Activate, Ulock you now use iLiberty.
There are 2 excellent tutorials how to use iLiberty for Mac or PC, pick the one that meets your needs and jailbreak, activate, unlock your iPhone with firmware 1.1.4

cause your iPhone used to be on firmware 1.0.2, it has bootloader 3.9. So in iLiberty check all boxes exept "Unlock with 3.9FB" (Mac), "Downgrade Bootloader from 4.6..." (Windows). This operation is not necessary cause you have bootloader 3.9, its only for newer bootloader 4.6.

You'll have a jailbroken, acivated, unlocked 1.1.4 iPhone then

ok, i've made some progress!

i do have a second iphone with same FW and same BL where the installer hasn't been updated to the newest version 3.1. i did the following and this worked flawlessly.

• using the old installer (believe, it was 3.0) installed "the virginizor" from the "i.unlock.no" source

• restored via iTunes to 1.1.4 immediately.

• downloaded iDemocracy 3 from drakenza.com

• selected only jailbreak and activate. no unlock yet.

• when it was done, opened up installer and installed BSD subsystem and Bootneuter.

• in bootneuter, left the bootloader to "3.9", put neuter to on, left fakeblank off and put unlock on.

• pressed flash in the top right.

result looks cool! :cool:

BUT the phone is virginized completely, i.e. i'v lost everything, all media data, all contacts, all history, all text messages ... everything. unfortunately i have no clue about iTunes, could or should i have made a backup there? does it work? and how? are there other tools available which let me make backups from an iphone? don't want to do the same mistake twice.

You restore to 1.1.4, so you loose all data. You should not use iTunes option "backup from previous...". Cause of the differences in handling users etc, this would leed to problems. Use iTunes to sync music, video, adresses, calendar, the rest is gone.

On Installer. Delete Installer and the Framework using WinSCP (i guess you are on Windows). On Mac OS x Fugu, cyberduck, transmit and others will do the job on the iPhone that still needs to be virginized/upgraded..

If the Installer on the iPhone that you just updated is still on 3.0 (meaning not updated to 3.1) use WinSCP and copy Installer.app from that iPhone to your desktop, then to the iPhone that needs to be virginized. Chmod Installer.app to 755 and start it. Virginize and then do the same that you used for the already upgraded iPhone.

ok, i get it ... time for change. :rolleyes:

neither on windows nor mac os x but on ubuntu (hardy heron). only because of unlocking and jailbraking the iphones one of the computers here is a dual boot. i'm using gtkpod, btw a very nice and easygoing ubuntu tool, to copy music, videos etc to the iphones. this might explains why i am not good with iTunes.

the Installer on the iphone i've just updated is v3.01, so i will give it a try.
