[Maps] Can we download maps from Google Maps?
Is it possible to download Google Maps (while on a free wifi spot) and save them on the iphone, and access them later on (maybe by safari off-line or something) without the need of Edge costs or Wifi?

i don't think so but you can always use a screenshot application and access them thru your camera roll.

The google maps application on the iphone caches the downloaded map tiles in a sqllite db. I was working on a pre-downloader that downloads the map tiles of an area to your iphone and caches the tiles, so you could browse the map while offline (no wifi/edge). The problem is that the google map tiles on the iphone uses different tile sizes than the ones on the normal web.
My intention was to use a program to download the tiles from the normal google maps (there are plenty, forgot the names), downsize them and then upload them to the iphone sqllite cache db. Its just, i'm so busy with different things ;)

actually, you can search for the address while you have WIFI...press HOME to get out of the app...and when you're out and about, it will display your last map...even give you some zoom capability.

this would be really helpful especially when downloading maps of abroad because then there would be no data roaming charges (which are proving a killer!)

This is the ultimate solution!
If this is done, it will be a dream come true! Please keep us updated if there is some progress...
Screenshot is ok but no zoom in-out etc...

Any progress on that map cacher puRe? It's a solution which should really have come on the iPhone by default, but it's now up to talent like yours to make it possible for the rest of us
