installer: what's the point of?
In 1.x days, we had a ton of sweet apps on our phones. there were no AppStore. we had installer. and yes, we were pretty happy.
now, Cydia won the 2.x race - yes, it was also available back in end of 1.x times - and we got Appstore.
visually, Installer is pretty much well polished. but it is currently lacking one feature: packages. it is as desert as the Sahara.
what do you currently use from installer you cannot find on Cydia or Appstore?
I feel sad seeing such a cool app installer is (was?) dieing this way.

yea its pritty pointless to even have it, it just sits there and never gets used for anything. Guess thats what happens when they loose the race..

to really be honest, out of all my apps only 5 come out of cydia, 0 out of installer, 15 free appstore apps and the rest 30 apps are ssh cracked apps

you need it if you are unlucky and use kate :p

Yeah and even that is quite bad. They shouldn't force their customers to use Installer. I was told in an email from them that there might be a Cydia repo once Kate goes final. I'm gonna email them about that again now that Kate is final.

I thought ripdev was the developer for kate and now also own development for installer. I wouldn't think they would launch on Cydia unless they're ready to throw in the towel on Installer 4, and just leave one jailbreak installation manager.

Since installer 4 came out i never installed anythin from it... i mean i never found anything interestin even after i added a ton of sources to it. Now i dont even have it on mah fon anymore. Those rip devs are not even tryin i think; other wise we would have a fully functional installer by now.

because saurik based his code on Debian APT package management, with 16 years of previous experience on linux, and installer based its package management on the name "installer"
its like a small mom and pop shop buying the name Nike and assuming that people will still buy their shoes when they are made out of crap. The name "installer" does nothing for me. should have called it RipDev Installer for free and let installer stay where it was. but it seemed like a early on - pre 2.0 purchase for money and hope they make profit cash deal that just went terribly wrong. now they are going to attempt to sell apps like appstore? but why would anyone wanna risk that when you can just put your own copy protection into paid apps like intelliscreen and iSMS black list, etc.
go go cydia go...
this reminds me of when <insert baseball team> sucked and I was the only fan, and then they won the world series and all these bandwagon jumpers are now the biggst fans wearing <insert baseball team> shirts and hats with season tickets and tailgating.. yay!
Kudo's to the people who believed in cydia when they were on iphone 1.1.4 and it was cydia vs installer. now that everyones eyes are opened up, I forgive you
