neither on windows nor mac os x but on ubuntu (hardy heron). only because of unlocking and jailbraking the iphones one of the computers here is a dual boot. i'm using gtkpod, btw a very nice and easygoing ubuntu tool, to copy music, videos etc to the iphones. this might explains why i am not good with iTunes.

the Installer on the iphone i've just updated is v3.01, so i will give it a try.

I have an Ubuntu box here near to my two Macs and one Win-PC. Usually sitting on my Mac i have played with gtkpod feeding my iPod for a while. Its a nice tool, no doubt about.
Just in case your 3.01 Installer wont work, i have sent you a link for download an older one.

good news!

i removed the Installer.app in /Applications and copied the 3.01 Installer from my 1.1.4 upgraded iphone and i do have a smoothly working installer again now.

i didn't start virginizing because i would like to solve the back up issue for the text messages before. i read about 'Syphone' which would do this, it's freeware but for Macintosh only. does anyone know about something similar for linux or windows?

i successfully made a backup and restore of all sms. all i had to do was to copy the file 'sms.db'.

important: the sms.db is in a different directory and has different ownership from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 but if you put it into the right directory and change the ownership it works.
