Increase your application space...(if you are brave)
Right well this is not for the faint of heart....
Requirements: Knowledge of UNIX/OSX (intermediate or advances), SSH, jailbroken, BSD subsystem
Warning: You will possibly need to restore if this does not work as anticipated. I haven't even tested it.... So dont blame me.
OK so here goes:
Modify your fstab so that the media partition will be mounted with execute
permissions:
Right currently it should look like this:
cat /private/etc/fstab
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw,noexec 0 2
Now delete the noexec option.... and save it.
next cd to the root of your iPhone:
cd /
then we need to copy the Applications directory and all of its subdirs to the media partition:
cp -r /Applications /private/var
now, just for now we need to rename the original /Applications dir:
mv /Applications /Applications.bak
now we need to create a symlink from the "new" Applications directory to the root of your iPhone:
ln -s /Applications /private/var/Applications
Right.... now reboot your phone and pray.... if it works you can now delete the /Applications.bak directory:
rm -rf /Applications.bak
Now even though the application installer will report the same amount of space free, stuff that gets installed into "Applications" will actually be stored in your Media partition.
As I have stated there is a good chance you can really stuff things up by doing this. I'm not going to, but people might find the concept useful.

but this needs to be switched:

Great idea ! I knew I got the 8gb for a reason. I'll try it in the near future...

Slick idea. If anyone tries it, could you report your results? I've run out of space once already and can foresee it happening again in the near future.
"Are you into S&M?"
"Well...I'm a Red Sox fan. Does that count?"
Go Sox!

Yes, that's a great idea. I'm eagerly waiting for somebody to test it.

This has been discussed elsewhere and lot of people already have done this. Myself yesterday did this and now I have my Application directory in media partition. I am on 1.0.2 and used iBrikr to change fstab as mentioned above by downloading it and modifying using windows wordpad and saving and loading back using iBrikr. Then following other commands and it worked. be carfull about typing exact commands. Case sensitive is very important.
