Geo-tagging is coming to iPhone for both the Camera and Maps applications with 2.0. There will be an option to turn it on/ off. For the screenshot of this feature in action, visit http://**************.net/

the camera app is getting geotagging, the maps app doesn't appear to have changed other than asking you permission to use the locate me feature (which could really get annoying)

Makes sense and is a nice feature to have lon and lat already in exif-metadata of your photos. using it on maps - as thecompkid said - could get annoying.
It would not put maps to sleep when the iPhone usually would, put the blue pulsing ball (introduced in Beta 3) in maps and probably drain your battery cause it has to get feeded by new lat/lon data every couple seconds. That would either require an internal or external gps-module (much speculated about) work all the time or have to update with skyhooks database via GPRS/EDGE/3G frequently if the location of wi-fi networks is used to recalculate. Same for battery if triagulation of cell towers has to be re-done frequently.
For using the camera that only has to be done on a one-time basis when the photo is taken. Such photos could then interact perfect with Google services like Panoramio (http://www.panoramio.com/) and others. Plus geodata are already used by some apps on the Mac like Preview and Aperture.
