i don't understand why this mode change would not be near the top of developers' goals. it seems in just everyday usage that being able to use the email function and do texting in landscape mode would make everyone's life easier. is there some reason that this is particularly difficult?

in my own case, i find that none of the apple updates so far offer anything as ultimately useful as a reason to upgrade without the landscape feature. i'm keeping my unlocked t-mobile iphone at 1.1.1 until that feature is eventually offered.

Depends on which developers you speak about I guess

For Apple developers, who have the source to these applications, whatever their marketing gurus demand is on top of their goals. And they're probably all working/testing/whatever on the SDK stuff.

As for any other developers, and you're probably taking about the developers among us users here, that's not as trivial as it may sound to a non-developer. This wouldn't be just "writing a mode change", but instead writing a totally new email and texting application that also, in addition to writing new code to do all the original does, would support landscape.

Take a look at the alternative texting applications out there, (We)iSMS, SMSD, and I think a third, and see where they are. Your best chance is probably requesting landscape from them, but honestly, I don't even want texting the old way they reimplement, I find the original MobileSMS app still superior thanks to it's threading. But that's quite a matter of personal taste I guess.

i thought that since some of the game emulators, for instance, were able to be programmed to be used in landscape that the texting and email apps could be adjusted the same way. but i understand that it's not that simple from the way you describe the way it would have to be done - rewriting the original apple apps. but since the camera has been modified it seemed that someone could find a way to modify the other apple apps - specifically email and texting.

it's funny, i was using the gba app and a text came in as i was playing doom. the text showed up in the landscape mode while i was active in the game, also in the landscape mode. doesn't that mean there is lurking somewhere back there (in the apple text codes) a way to get it to option into a landscape mode?

That's why I installed PHP on my touch and am now using a PHP-based wiki to create, handle (and search!) all my text notes via Safari, ie, using the landscape keyboard
