got my iphone working so far.. with o2 germany.
The thing that im wondering about is what that little blueish symbol next to my carrier name is.. it has an "E" on it. Does that mean that im connected with edge?
When i turn wifi on i get the wifi symbol, but when i turn it off the "E" appears in its place.
Im just wondering cause i dont want edge to be active all the time since i dont want to get a shock at the end of the month with my phonebill.

Does thet"E" just mean that i could use edge or does it mean that im actually connected all the time via edge?

when its blue you are connected... when its clear... your are connected but not using it

I'm in germany aswell using o2 and having Turbosim ...
o2 over here does not even provide EDGE. The sign says nothing, just that the phone is able to data connect and there is some EDGE provider around - in this case its not o2 Germany (only T-Mobile offering EDGE over here).
In terms of your and my provider it means: when you dont have any WLAN accessible (WLAN icon sits ontop of "E", you just can see it then) and try to use internet services or stocks, weather, the phone tries to make data connection. Here at Germanys o2 it connects to GPRS what is way to slow for youtube, lot of www-sites, but ok for mail (at least for me), stocks, weather.
Goto Settings->Gerneral->Network->EDGE and just type surfo2 at APN no username, no password.
You are charged then by the minute i guess. I have the dataplan "Internet M" what is at o2 made for UMTS, but covers GPRS aswell. 10 Euro (14 $) per month gives me 200 MB/month; for 25 Euro /month you get "fair-flat", meaning 5GB/month.
iPhone always uses WLAN if it has access to. If you type surfo2 into EDGE/APN it will connect via GPRS if there is no WLAN. If you dont want that, just type surfo there. No data connection then. If you need it every now and then, just add the number 2 after surfo and you are online.
