I've been struggling all day to get the free toolchain running on my hackintosh but somewhere in the middle I started wondering if what I wanted to program was actually possible to make.

I want a tool that can be used exclusively from the command line that utilizes CoreLocation to display my iPhone 3G's current GPS coordinates.

Should be fairly easy to make, right? I've googled around a bit for a few tutorials on how to make basic CoreLocation applications with the iPhone SDK that displays coordinates in a pretty interface, but I want a tool that can be used from a terminal environment or SSH.

I found a utility that kind of lets me get the coordinates, but it doesn't use CoreLocation. I'm talking about Erica Sadun's findme utility. On her website she says the following about command-line tools with CoreLocation:

I’m not using core location. Core location will not work from the command line due to authentication issues.

I've also looked at Locatable, but like findme it requires an internet connection to actually work.

So, is the tool I'm looking to make / find possible to do?

In the end, I wish to use this tool to feed coordinates through a USB cable (SSH or some kind of serial connection) to a laptop where I'm using gpsd (or something like it), ultimately being used for a navigation program on the laptop, or adding coordinates to ESSIDs that I capture with aircrack-ng.

I'd really like a tool like this as well, but for a different purpose. I'd like to be implement findme's original idea: a lojack that doesn't talk to anyone's servers. The iphone knows it's location, just have it fire off an email occasionally. Ideally the software would try slightly harder to get a GPS fix if it can...

I'm tired of everyone trying to rope us into joining their social network for simple little functions. I'm certain that one day the world will look at social networks the same way that we look at pyramid schemes now...

I, too, have been looking for an accurate command line utility to get the iphone's latitude & longitude via GPS. Findme is quite inaccurate, ranging from 10 to 300 miles away from my actual location. My iPhone 3g is set up such that I can connect to it via ssh and sftp from anywhere using its 3g connection. Being able to track it through ssh would make an excellent security measure. If anyone finds or makes a better application, please reply in this thread.

I apologize for necromancing this thread, but has anybody ever found a solution? I, too, am interested in finding a command-line utility to give me GPS coordinates so I can automatically track the areas in which I have poor AT&T service.

Does anybody know of a command-line way to get GPS coordinates that still works?

Here is the command line program corelocationcli - Project Hosting on Google Code

You can run it to get GPS coordinates from your Mac.

Please let me know if you are using any good scripts with this program and maybe we can publish them on the project site.
