I'm sure many of you have the same problem. I have a volume-based EDGE plan, so I want to make sure the iPhone only transfers data when I tell it to - i.E. no synching of weater information, stock quotes or NTP time in the background.

My workaround so far has been to change the EDGE settings to an invalid APN, so that no data is transferred and I'm not charged.
However, that seems to be a great opportunity for a little hack - an application that does nothing but display to buttons - "real" APN and "fake" APN and edit - or even easier - move the appropriate .plist file from a temp directory to the system directory.

Has anyone seen such an app yet?

I'd like one of those too. Even one that just turned Edge/GPRS on and off ... and maybe with a turn off timer that could be handy in case you forget.

I want this too. And it wiil be good if this app will a icon on sprigboard with diffrenet image on status, like switch . Maybe Red Crossed when EDGE of.

I've been thinking about doing a quick customization of the iSwap application to do just this thing. I'm headed out on vacation this weekend, but I'll try and whip something up before I go.

Okay, I've pulled together a quickie application called DeEDGE that disables EDGE on your iPhone. This app is a customization of iSwap whose author deserves most of the credit here.

Download DeEDGE 0.1 here

This is an initial "get something out there" release. Re-enabling EDGE doesn't work for some reason, more testing is obviously needed. Any smart folks who see what I'm doing wrong please email me or reply to this thread.

Usage
1. Install BSD Subsystem package (available via AppTapp Installer)
2. Install DeEDGE.app onto your iPhone
3. Click DeEDGE from your SpringBoard
4. Restart your phone
5. Verify EDGE is no longer functioning

My to-do list
1. Properly credit author of iSwap on which this program is based.
2. Complete functionality for re-enabling EDGE. Any good shell programmers out there care to take a look at this?
3. Start Google Code project to give this a proper home
4. Create a better icon! Any graphic designers can email me or reply to this thread
5. Make a better "in progress" screen. Any graphic designers can email me or reply to this thread
6. Get this distributed via AppTapp installer. Anyone know who I have to contact about this?
7. Come up with a better name for this program. Any suggestions are welcome!
8. Document just what the heck this program does more thoroughly.

Thanks for putting this together and DOUBLE THANKS for giving me the credit that you have! There have been a number of programs come out that have used my idea and code (which is great) but didn't say one word about where they got the idea or code. Not saying that iSwap is that big a deal but I think it was the first shell script program that was a standalone app (iDecorator used the Demo.app). Anyway, thanks again (twice)!

I've uploaded v0.2 which allows for EDGE to be re-enabled. Still very rough, but it's functional.
