[Advice] Using iPhone "TimeCapsule" For Actual Backups?
Hello;
I recently upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.4 and (as advised) didn't restore contacts, photos, settings, bookmarks, etc. Because apparently it can give some sort of problems.
I'm not bothered about those things, however what I wouldn't like to lose is my address book with all my contacts.
Before upgrading, i used the app "TimeCapsule" to create a backup/restore point of my address book, and emailed myself the file (with a .tar.gz extension).
Now I'm wondering how to restore my contacts using this file that TimeCapsule created. Is it even possible? I was guessing maybe by copying the file through to a specific folder via SSH it might work, but I'm really not sure where to start.
Any help would be much appreciated!!
thanks for your time,
Santz

You did right, not to use the "backup from..." option but the one that says "setup as a new iphone". You then use iTunes to sync and have abck all contacts, calendar, photos, music, videos. (as long as you had used Addressbook/iCal on Mac; Outlook on Windows and iTunes when syncing the "old" iPhone. No problem with that
The only stuff you are not able to recover are Settings (like known Wi-FI), Notes, bookmarked map spots, settings for stocks, sms-communication, call history etc.
You could have copied the data manually before upgrading, but you obviously did not. You where using timecapsule.
Easiest way would be to install timecapsule again on your iPhone. The programm installs a directory
/var/mobile/Library/TimeCapsule
You could SFTP with WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck/Fugu (Mac) into the iPhone and copy back the backups you have into the proper location . TimeCapsule creates folders inside /var/mobile/Library/TimeCapsule for any backup option. Then you could restore via TimeCapsule.
Seems that you dont have used Outlook/Adressbook to sync your adresses with, cause you backuped the contacts.
Hope that helps

That did the trick! What i didn't realize is that the .tar file is actually another form of compressed files!
Thank you very much

Oh, ok. Thats a pretty old arcive format from the time tapes did their job for saving data. It's from tape archiver and well known in Unix enviroments.
glad that helped,
