When last I checked, blank.app and the method mentioned in the other hackint0sh thread still launched spacer apps when you accidentally tapped in the "empty" spaces. I use the method of double tap icon hiding discussed here on TUAW. Basically you use plutil for the iphone and the term app for the iphone and set up your springboard plist first using the commnd "plutil -s SBEnableAppReveal -v YES com.apple.springboard.plist"
If successful, it should say Setting property SBEnableAppReveal to YES
Then type restart.
After that, you can hide whichever icons you want by using this command "plutil -1 SBIsRevealable /Applications/Nameofapp.app/Info.plist"
For example, if you wanted to enable it for Customize, you'd type plutil -1 SBIsRevealable /Applications/Customize.app/Info.plist and if it is successful, it will tell you it's setting the value to </true>. If it complains about a bus error, check your commands and path. If it succeeds, just restart the Springboard again, and you should have the blank space where Customize was. Just double tap the space to reveal the icon again when you need it, and then double tap it to hide it again.
I guess I should note to, that at least with Customize, I have to go in and set my icon order again everytime I install a new app, so it gets picked up in com.apple.springboard.plist. With it all written it out, it kinda looks like way more of a chore than it actually is.
