[2.0] Custom characters as keyboard pop-ups
This might be good tip for all of those who are looking of ways to localize their iPhone keyboard to display and input custom characters (mainly characters from local languages and so on).
But my question is a little bit different. As you know, you can press and hold pretty much any key on iPhone keyboard, and you will get a small pop-up of "alternative" characters, for example under letter "A" you get sort of international versions of letter A, but these letter versions was not the kind I wanted, as Latvian characters are a bit different.
So, by editing "Keyboard-default.plist" file under /System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/ you can put any character you want under corresponding letter. For example I wanted "Ā" under letter A, so when I press and hold A on keyboard I get a pop-up with an "Ā". Same applies to ".com" (you can put ".co.uk" under there or whatever you like) and others keys, so you can have your local characters without having to install any addition software.
However, one disadvantage I found, that you can't make a pop-up with letters, which doesn't have ANY pop-up to start with. In other words, letters A and S and U and some others have their default pop-ups to start with, editing Keyboard-default.plist you just changing characters, but, for example, letter G has no pop-up.
"Keyboard-default.plist" is made of "Roman-Accent-A" dictionaries with some arrays and strings in it (it's very easy to edit, if you understand the structure, I user PlistEdit Pro on Mac).
So the problem is with letter, which don't have "Roman-Accent" dictionaries. I figured, if I created new dictionary and called it "Roman-Accent-G" with the same structure as letters A or U or others, that letter G will now have pop-up, but it doesn't.
I guess my question then is, what makes a letter pop-up, and where can I edit it so I can apply pop-up's to other letters, to make custom characters under them.
Yes, I have the exact same problem. Has anybody got the solution? Or any progress?
You would think that come August 22 when iPhones start being sold in Latvia, that they would include Latvian charcters in the keyboard.
