The iPhone uses a different .png format than the Mac/PC/... No worries, it should work on your iPhone.
iPhone 3GS / 3.1.2 JB (PwnageTool) / 04.26.08 carrier-locked, Carrier Logo Fixer / Cydia / 1000 posts on Hackint0sh
Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.
Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
* on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
* on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Jim Danner said it right. If you still want to see the iPhone's .pngs you can convert them in Windows.
For Windows users:
Step 1)
Download this file:
http://www.s$ndspace.com/file/lgepqf
(Replace $ with e)
Step 2)
After the download is done you can extract the archive by using winrar or your preferred rar decompressor.
Step 3)
Extract the folder from the rar.
You should have a directory named fixpngWindows in front of you.
Step 4)
Copy and paste the files you would like to convert into the "png" subdirectory.
Step 5)
Now simply run iPhoneFixPng.exe and press convert
If all went well your new, readable, png's should be in the "fixed" subdirectory!
