I am curious, too, not essentially about the MBP and Apple TV but I would like to know in general if it's possible to run Apple TV OS 3.0 on Macs.
Install the 2.x and then update for instance.
Could anyone clarify that?

Well, just try it ;-)

Make an image of your OSBoot partition on the ATV'S internal HDD and copy it to a partition on your Mac. Then reboot and hold down the opt/alt key. If the bootmanager pops up and you can select the partition where you copied the dmg before, then it might work.

On the other hand it might be possible that the ATV OSX lacks proper hardware support ...

atv4mac will let you do it, but only on tiger based computers and only up to OS 2.1

well, i wanna do this because i dont have an appletv. so i restored a partition with the appletv 3.0 os. it should up as a bootable device but when i booted from it, it just shows a silver apple on a black screen, then quickly switched to the grey apple on a grey screen and booted my regular snow leopard drive.

EDIT: i also downloaded the 10.4.7 intel update from apple.com and copied the mach_kernel file from that into the OSBoot root

if your computer cant boot tiger i dont imagine you'll have much luck booting an OS that is basically 10.4.7. i tried to get tiger installed on a partition on my mbp and never had any luck getting it to boot, best i could ever do was a kernel panic, not even safe mode would work. pretty lame.

ok here's what happened. i downloaded the 10.4.7 intel update from apple.com and copied the mach_kernel file from that into the OSBoot root. then i copied my extensions from /System/Library/Extensions to the same place on the OSBoot drive. then i deleted the kernel cache entry in com.apple.boot.plist and added a -v boot flag. When it booted it loader drivers for about 10 seconds then froze on kernel version: darwin.....(the rest of the kernel version). and it stay on that for a while so i just restarted.

anyone have any ideas?
