Default app's don't start

I torrented a 10.4.1 and installed it on a presario x1000 (pentium centrino/512mb/60gb).

Everything seems to work OK, i get a mac screen and can run finder/dashboard/safari/etc. The problem is when I try to download other apps.

for example, i've download azureus, tomato, utorrent (and some others). they look OK, no errors during what I assume to be the install process, but when I click on their icons, NOTHING happens. no program on the screen, zip zilch nada.

I do get a tiny little 'blip' on the bar at the bottom (where finder dashboard mail safari etc icons are) but no application starts up.

as you can probably tell, I'm BRAND new to this mac stuff. I'm no newbie, SW engineer for 25 years, unix/linux/xenix/venix/yada yada yada. This is just too puzzling.

Hopefully this question is easy, I couldn't find anything using 'won't start' in the search.

Thanks

Default

to add a little more to this, when I go to the directories of the applications that I've downloaded (for example: /Applications/Opera.app/Contents/MacOS for the Opera browser) and then run Opera I get the following message:

./Opera: Bad executable (or shared library)

but if I go to the directory for an apple app (for example: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS for the Safari browser) and run Safari, the Safari browser starts up.

The output of 'file' for Opera is :

Opera: Mach-O executable i386

The output of 'file' for Safari is:

Safari: Mach-O fat file with 2 architectures
Safari (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386
Safari (for architecture ppc): Mach-O executable ppc
